I can find most of my USA relatives on Ancestry but I end at my great grandparents. I'd love to know more about my people from Yugoslavia.

From my cursory research, mostly on this site, I find our surnames coming from Gomirje (Trbović, Kosanović, Mamula, Marović (could be 'Maravić) and Milanović). I notice some of my ancestors added the 'h' to the end of our surnames when arriving to the US.

I am also finding a lot of misspelling on our names and possibly regions emigrated from. For example, on my great grandfather's, Milan Trbovich's naturalization form, it says he is from 'Terbouic' 'Jugo Slavia'. I can't find 'Terbouic', is that an error? The region 'Dresnica' is listed on his draft card, but I understand that to be 'Drežnica'?

Am I on the right track? I would appreciate any feedback or advice on how I can expand my research.

Thanks!

Yea, I would like to see a scan of that document if possible because there are a lot of "dreznica"s out there. It means forest village and there are a lot of them 😉

Regards,
Sergej

Let me try to attach some files. I am still searching for the Marović(h) and Mamula papers. My aunt says she has them.

Sorry for double posts, feel free to delete first attachment attempt 😉

Emigrated: 1904/1905

Maternal side:
Eli Robert Marovich: Born 2 August 1875 Yugoslavia (I have conflicting birthdates)

(I have her parents names as William Mamula and Mamy Milanovich)

Sorry for all the posts but I found additional info on Milan Trbović: after searching the Ellis Island site, he may have left the US a year later (1906). If it is my Milan, his info is:

First Name : Milan
Last Name : Trbovic
Nationality : Hungary, Hungarian
Last Place of Residence : Ogulin
Date of Arrival : June 22nd, 1906
Age at Arrival : 18
Gender : Male
Marital Status : Single
Ship of Travel : Sofia Hohenberg
Port of Departure : PalermoManifest
Line Number : 0009

His age on the manifest lines up (18) and he answered 'yes' on the question 'been in the USA before'. I understand it is not uncommon to have different nationalities listed for Serbs, such as Croatian, Hungarian, etc. Now I have three places he was from and/or lived; Terbouic, Dresnica and Ogulin.

I wish I would have asked more questions of my elders when they were around. I still have some alive but we are far away and communication is difficult. My aunt is nearby and has good knowledge of the family. We're having sessions and exchanging info at the moment but I am trying to fill in the gaps and get as much info on my own to make our sessions more focused.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Ok, did some checking. Good news is that the Trbovic surname comes from Ogulin district and Drežnica (the spelling is important!) Its all in the same region be it that some of these places ceased to exist. We actually have some data about that on our site posted 8 years ago here: https://www.rodoslovlje.com/trbovic/

The Trbovic family is Serbian and if you write the monastery there they should be able to tell you more!

Gomirje area: https://goo.gl/maps/VVo7ecsknTR2
Ogulin area: https://goo.gl/maps/axBDkg8jxNt
Dreznica area: https://goo.gl/maps/hViu6wA3ahM2
Trbovici area(this is what the form meant): https://goo.gl/maps/kjf4i7vfeQr

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info, it confirms what I was thinking. I emailed the Monastery in Gomirje. Is that the Monastery you are referring to?

In addition to records I am also trying to find out who our family Slava is; my grandfather had dementia my whole life and my father was not very religious, although baptized in the Serbian Orthodox Church. Both have passed away and this info is lost to me.

Would all Trbović in this area share the same Slava?

Yes that is the monastery in question.
The family saint is most likely the same as listed on our page, one of the reasons is that a lot of people had a similar surname but wouldn't necessarily be related. So the family saint gives an extra distinction method to solve that problem. Most people were baptized but not really practicing besides Slava's and holidays.

Sergej
