Hello, am I new to researching this side of the world! My greatgrandparents came from Titel, at the time of their birth it was in Hungary. I have read that Titel is located in the extreme southeast corner of the Batschka on the Theiß River, and that it is north of Belgrade. Ana Wichtner was the daughter of the Burgermeister of Titel, we think she was born on Nov 15th, 1885. In 1909 she married Nikoli Apfel?? (In America it became Nicholas Apfl). Nicholas was also born in Titel, on April 23rd, 1886. His parents, Matthew Apfl and Barbara Lock, were married in Titel in 1886. Nicholas came to America in 1921, and Ana & their 3 children (Josef, Rose, and William) came in 1926. I have Ana's passport, but am unable to read it. It has a crest on the front which matches the one for the Kingdon of Serbia, Croatia, and Slovenes. The passport is Bilingual in French, and some Slovic tounge I can't make heads or tails of. The last pages of the passport appear to be in German. The French part lists her name as Apfl, but the Slovik side looks like Aufel, with a dash over the top of the U.
Any help in translating this passport, or any history of Titel or my family would be greatly appreciated. I have just started this side of my family tree, and with the language barrier, and the changing countries in that area I have no idea how to research them!
Hi there,
Your family would be classified as DonauSchwaben. What we can do is if you can scan the passport we can give it a look. As for Titel. I suggest you write the German community in Vojvodina. You can find their address in our link section at the main page.
Regards,
Sergej
I have the passport scanned - it's 9 images, where should I send it?
