Most of the archives are being microfilmed. However we are trying to find out it its only the non-Orthodox material.
Please contact the LDS Church History Library for more information on what has been done already.

Sergej
Hi all,
I have seen a few notes posted in the past about the Archives being filmed. I have tried to contact the archives in Sremska M. directly, and have had a few friends make phone calls without success.
To be specific I am researching some of the Ruthenian/Rusyn/Russini/Rusnaci families around Sid, Srem and Kucura. I have written to a few of the parish priests and they have shared what little information they have. Also some relatives have also provided a few official transcripts of Birth, Marriage and Death records.
I have a large gap in records from 1848-1880 that would best be filled in with Church records. (Greek Catholic).
Can anyone give me some guidance as to the status of these records? Or can anyone direct me to some alternate sources? Perhaps these records where destroyed or taken by the Nazis?
Any help you could provide would be appreciated.....
Paul
Paul,
How did you write these archives? What did they tell you?
Regards,
Sergej
Hi Sergej,
Sorry for the delay in responding. I have been trying to
1st, I had a friend from Novi Sad call the archives, (Sremska M.) to verify that a letter in English would not be a problem.
2nd, A wrote a short letter asking what records were available for the area and time frame I am searching. I did send return postage, but no money for research. I want to know what general records are available before I send money. It has been 8 months without any reply.
For your additional information: I have searched the LDS records for the area (Srem), it appears that only Roman Catholic, Hungarian and some Lutheran/Evangelical records are available. These records mainly come from the Hungarian, Croatian, Austrian and German Archives. There are very, very few Orthodox or Greek Catholic records available. Through LDS, there are a scattering of military records from this time frame. (1880-1840). The complete 1828 census is available.
As we say in America…Am I barking up the wrong tree?..Do any records even exist from this time frame in the area?..I have three or four family names that should be in Sid and Bacinci during this time frame. And one family that moves from Kucura to Sid…
What advice can you share?
Paul
Hmm, let your friend from Novi Sad call them then, or even better let him check out the data for you.
The Serbian Orthodox Church doesn't allow the LDS church to microfilm the Orthodox books, so there isn't much on microfilm. Old fashioned work is what needs to be done
We have a letter tempalte for SGS members, and some members in that area that do research for members, be it free or for a small fee. Thats the only thing I can advice if your friend cant help you out.

Sergej
Sergej,...
Unfortunately all my friend and family are busy with jobs and home. (This is good thing)
And, it is very hard for some one to do this kind of research who is not very familiar with the archive and its procedures. (This is not that unusual, I have had to hire experts to research some areas here, in a few very difficult areas)
I am not opposed to paying; I just would like to know what kind of results I can expect, if any.
Is there anyone in the area who you can recommend?
Paul
Well that depends. Do you want to do things yourself or spend it all away? If you want to get involved into the process yourself of doing research in Serbia than I would suggest membership in the SGS. ( http://www.rodoslovlje.com/novo/showarticle.php?articleID=26 )
Officially we do not advice researchers to non-members, we are in the process of creating an accreditation programm for researchers. SGS members can ask each other for a free or for a fee. We are not in the position to give garantuees neither are the researchers.
We will give accreditations in the future that someone is a valid researcher, but the SGS will never offer research services. We will tho display a list of researchers that one can use, but the contract is between the researcher and contractor.
We are in the difficult position that the archives are not microfilmed and that basically if you want to do research you need to speak Serbian and write/call them or hire someone. Because the archives are not microfilmed it will be hard to give an indication on what still excists and what has been destroyed. Serbia in that fashion is a country full of uncertanties.

Sergej
There is one researcher I can ask to contact you. You will get a PM, you can work out the details with him.

I have regular contact with the main office in Salt Lake and Vienna. Some things are filmed but not catalogued.

I am starting again my search for family from Erdevik. Have new areas been filmed? Can you recommend someone who can search church/civil records in this area in the 1870-80's for a fee? I am sure I will never be able to travel there.

Thank you, Sergei. I'm going to find that letter you mentioned. When you get the accreditation list set up for this area, please let me know.
