Hello,

My 2nd great-grandfather was Stephen (Istvan, Stephanus) Holi, born 27 November 1888 in Futog. He married Katarina Lakatos and they had a son, Ferencz (Frank) Holi, born 11 January 1906 also in Futog. Katarina's birth record I found in the Ófutak Catholic Church Records (I believe her mother, and possibly father, were Donauschwaben) however I was unable to find Stephen or Ferencz's birth records. I am unsure of Stephen's ethnicity or religion, he is listed as German, Polish, Hungarian, and Yugoslavian on different documents. There is a possibility "Holi" is the shortened version of a longer surname. I don not have information regarding his parents, he has been a big mystery to my family.

I am hoping to find these birth records. Are there different churches/records for Ofutak and Futog? If so, how might I go about checking to see if Stephen or Ferencz's records are there?

Thank you, I am new to this forum so please let me know if I have omitted important information, or if my question is better directed elsewhere.

Holi is a Hungarian name and is used in the border region the Banat. Which sources did you use thus far? Did you directly access the church sources or the archives?

Sergej

Thank you for the reply, Sergej. I have searched through the Hungarian Catholic Church records (through both Ancestry.com and FamilySearch) for his name and birth date, and have looked more closely at the record where his wife's birth information was found, from the Catholic Church in Ófutak, around his birth date (27 Nov 1881). I did the same for his son, and I couldn't find entries for either of them. I also did broader searches through the sources available through both Ancestry and FamilySearch, but still can't find them. Is there another source for church records in this area that I might be missing?

Thanks again.

Well, local primary sources in the region. Not everything is microfilmed and with changing borders in the region you need to be patient in your search. Also, Family Search and Ancestry are known for their sloppiness in transcribing records. I would write the parishes directly if I were you.

Sergej

Thank you. I am hitting some roadblocks with this research, perhaps someone can help direct me.

I have searched through all microfilmed church records in Futog, even the records that have not been indexed, and found nothing. How would I find out if there are more records at another church in Futog? Secondly, their son Ferencz was born in January 11 1906. I know the Hungarian Civil Registration kept records from 1895, but it is unclear if Futog was included, and if so, where these records are kept now? Or if none of this applies, where else I can look for birth records from Futog in 1881 and 1906.

I am really struggling to find where these records would be now, so I don’t know who to write to. Any direction would be very much appreciated. I’m happy to pay for these records, I just don’t know who to ask.

Thanks again.

The best way is write them all and see who reacts.

The Futog records could be stored in Sombor as that region was at some time part of that administrative area (yes it changed a lot).

At the link page you can find the addresses, if you need help with that let me know.

Sergej

Good news, I was able to access the Kalocsa Archdiocese Archives and found the birth record for Frank Holi and the marriage record for his parents, Stephen Holi and Katalin Lakatos, all in Futog. However, the marriage record reveals that Stephen was not born in Futog, but instead Beocin, which is across the Danube from Futog. Unfortunately these records are not included in the Kalocsa Archdiocese archives.

Does anyone happen to know where birth records from Beocin in 1881 might be archived? Is there a parish I can reach out directly to in Beocin?

Thank you!

You can try that with the Archives in Novi Sad and the Monastery in Beocin:
[email protected]
Address: Manastirski put bb, 21 300, Beocin, Serbia

The Church:
PRAVOSLAVNA CRKVA SVETOG VASILIJA OSTROŠKOG ČUDOTVORCA – Beočin. Adresa: Svetosavska bb, Beočin

Sergej
