Dear All,

I'm searching for the church books from Zemun (Semlin, Zimony), as my family lived there during the 19. century. Most probably they lived in the area called Franztal.

The last record I've got is from 1855, and I'm searching for records between 1900-1960.

I have found different information on the location of the church books. Some says they were sent to Kalocsa/Hungary, others say they can be found in the municipality archives in Zemun, and some others say that the books were delivered to Belgrade and are kept in the state archives.

I would like to know if anyone is able to confirm the real location of the books.

Thank you in advance.

Br,
Zsolt Foldvari

Ok you need to look at 2 places. Both the central index in Belgrade and the local one in Zemun. According to law all the areas that fall under Belgrade should have deposited their archives at the main archives in Belgrade. But as you can guess not all of them did......:-(

So you need to look with the archives in Karnegija street and the ones in Zemun.

Sergej

Thanks a lot Sergej!

Do you think I have any chance to get permission to research in those archives?

Would I be able to manage with hungarin/english, or serbian/croatian is a must?

Serbo-Croatian is a must. You must obtain permission from the archives themselves. How depends on the local bureacracy, you know its still Serbia......

I think some people will speak broken English, dont count on Hungarian.

Good luck ;-)

Ok, thanks!

Just one more last thing:
If I go for SGS membership you'll be able to recommend some other local members, who would do the research for me for a separate fee. Correct?

It looks I have no other chance ;-)

Would there be some other advantage for me from being a member??

Zsolt

Yes thats correct we have members and contacts. Otherwise you will have access to the SGS forums where you can post more detailed information that is more confidential. Also you can use templates we publish that people can send to the archives etc. The SGS forums also allow you to upload images to the forums so we can take a peek at them etc. More goodies we ad in time so for 25 bucks per year I think its not a bad deal at all ;-)

Sergej
