I would like to find out more information about my Serbian ancestry.
I never met my Grandfather because he died in WWII and I never met my Great Grandfather because he died before I was born.
I would really like to find out more information about my Serbian ancestry, but I do not know where to begin.
My Great Grandfather's name was Dushan Mladen Despotovich. He was born in Prizren, Serbia in November 1890. His parents are Mladen Despotovich (b. 1857) and Juley Denian (b. 1860) also from Prizren, Serbia. According to my information, my Great Grandfather had 5 brothers Ljubica, Stevan, Despot, Stanko, and Krsta.
I have a few more names for the children of these brothers, but mostly my information is very limited. Any possible connections or suggestions on where to begin would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You

Hi Robin,
Despotovic is an old family name that resided in what we call old Serbia (Montenegro, Kosovo and Raska Region). What you should do is contact the Serbian Orthodox Church and ask for information but also the archives of Serbia can help. You would need to write to the Central Office in Belgrade because the archives from Kosovo are dispersed over the southern region ever since 1999. There are not many people with the surname Despot or Despotovich that are not related and if the family saint matches then you have even a bigger chance of being related.

Sergej
Sergej,
Thank you for your quick response. Just a few more questions. When contacting the Serbian Orthodox Church, will I need to know the family saint? Unfortunately, I do not know this information. If I need to know the family saint, do you know where this information can be found? When I write to the Serbian Orthodox Church and the Serbian Archives, can my inquiries be in English? And last, can the questions be broad or should they be very specific?
Thanks for your help

Robin,
You should first contact the archives. See what they say. Include name, date and place of birth of the individual if you have them. I advice to write in Serbian.

Sergej

Hi Robin,
I have just come across your message and hope that you are still around since we probably share the same ancestry.
My great-grandfather was also Despotovic from Prizren and I have been trying to collect the data about the family for some time now.
Please contact me here so that we can share the information that we have.
Regards,
Radovan
Radovan,
I am still around and always interested to get more information on the Despotovic family. My email address is [email protected]
Send me an email and I would be happy to share the information that I have compiled. Sounds like we may be related...How many Despotovics could there be in Prizren?
Can't wait to find out more
Robin
