Hello, My name is Nicholas and I am searching for my family roots. My Grandfather Jovan Dokmanovic immigrated from the town of Moravice in Yugoslavia in May of 1899. He married Simica Mrvos who immigrated a few years later from the town of Zagreb. I would like any help or to meet possible relatives in searching for them.

Thank You

Mrvoš family lived in the Gomirje Disctrict  Serbian Orthodox Church monastery community and it is more than highly unlikely that Simica Mrvoš lived or emigrated from Zagreb.  Also Moravice that is the place of origin of your Dokmanović ancestor is part of that community too ( town was known as Srpske Moravice in previous times due to the fact that ethnic Serbs lived there) If you provide more details about your ancestors - where did they emigrate to, ship manifests, naturalization papers, if they remained Serbian Orthodox after emigrating, I may be able to help you a lot - my fathers family is from that community and I researched all of the existing records quite extensively. :)

You will find the article I wrote in English language on their settling in that region and founding of the monastery in year 1600 here:

MRVOŠ family was one of the original founding families of the Gomirje monastery:

Hello Yugaya

Thank you for your response.

The only things that i know about Jovan Dokmanovic is that he came to America on May 22 1899 aboard the ship S.S.Kensington. He came to Pittsburgh Pa. to a brother in law's home. He had a sister named Mary who listed on her wedding application that her fathers name was Limo and her mother was Martha.

I have no info on Simicas arrival other than it was before 1905, because that is when they were married in 1905.

She had two brothers living here at the time, Nicholas and Peter Mrvos.

Her brothers were older, Nicholas was born about 1871.

They remained Serbian Orthodox and belonged to the Youngwood Serbian Orthodox Church in Youngwood, Pa.

Any information or direction you can point me will be greatly appriciated

One story about my Grandmother Simica is that her family was wealthy and did not approve of her marrying out of her class.

Thank you again for your help

Nick

Father's first name is mistranscribed, it should be SIMO DOKMANOVIĆ.

If Simica Mrvoš's family (father) MRVOŠ was wealthy, he will be among the merchants from the area listed in Serbian Trade Association "Privrednik" database - there was one in Vrbovsko ( the municipality MORAVICE belongs to). Did the brothers stay in the US or return? Do you have ship manifests or naturalization records for any of them?

last column on this link is MRVOŠ merchants :

http://baza.privrednik.net/privrednik.php?find=Mrvo%C5%A1&field=poslodavac&searching=yes&search=Pretraga&t=0

SIMO MRVOŠ that is found in this database,  listed as merchant from Vrbovsko (Moravice, Gomirje district), also appears as a subscriber for a book published in 1887 - and he is from the same location Moravice as the Dokmanović family - if the family lore is true about how her family was rich than he is the only individual found in period records that can be her father.

- about "Privrednik" and how to use this database:

http://www.rodoslovlje.com/documentation/serbian-trade-association-privrednik-merchant-database

You should contact the Serbian Orthodox Church they attended and married in and ask for the copies and scans of the original records, not a certificate or a transcript - in the marriage records of emigrants their home address and household number were listed, as well as information on the parents of both the bride and groom.

Also look at any ethnic society or group from the area, if they remained Serbian Orthodox they were most likely involved in the community there.

Ins and outs of researching ethnic Serbian ancestors from Austria-Hungary:

http://www.rodoslovlje.com/documentation/guide-researching-ethnic-serbian-ancestors-austria-hungary

att: SImo Mrvoš, merchant ( Симо Мрвош. газда ) ,  from Gomirje ( Гомирје) district,  listed as subscriber in year 1887.

Hello again, I have found in my research on my grandmother that her father and mother's name where Sava and Marta. I have obtained this from a Pennsylvania death certificate for her brother Nicholas. Also i believe her to have two sisters Cecilia and Mildred who married into the Mamula family. Is the Mamula family from the same area. Thank you so much for your help

Yes, the Mamulas are also from Gomirje district. I posted a lot of information on this family here:
