I am searching for information on my Mothers family's genealogy from the towns of Taras, Melence and Elemir.

My Mother's father, Despot Marinkov came to America in 1907 from Taras. His cousin Duscan Marinkov had come that same year but returned to Serbia (according to my Mother). My Mother's mother and sister came over in 1914, Jelena Ostoic Marinkov and Latinka Ostoic Marinkov. Their contact in Serbia (according to the ship manifest) was br in l -- Duscan Ostoic. My mother thinks her father was given to and Aunt and Uncle to continue the Marinkov name, and that he was originally an Ostoic, which agrees with the information on the ship manifest. How would I be able to research this question, and also where do i go to get copies of documents such as birth certificates, marriage certificate (i have the date of my grandparents marriage). I do have some names of my grandfathers brothers but had originally just assumed that they were Marinkov. My Grandmother, Jelena's last name is listed as Milankov and she was born in Elemir and lived in Melence. My grandfather, Despot Marinkov was from Taras.

My mother can understand and speak Serbian but i don't know if she can read it. She is 89 now and remembers some family history.
Thank you

Sergej

The only spelling i have seen of the name was from the Ellis Island records from the ship manifests..Ostoic. My mother pronounced the name "Ostenich". The name is'nt seen on any other records here that i know of.

I checked the phone pages in Taras for Marinkov and found a number of entries and checked for Ostoic and Ostojic and only found Ostojic..so perhaps it is the name..I know we did have relatives in both Taras and Melenci in 1961 when my aunt went to visit. Some of the cousins lived in Belegrade as there is a photo of the apartment that my Aunt stayed at with one of the cousins. I have photos of some with Serbian writing on the back of some of them. I however cannot read Serbian so I don't know what they have written. Some photos have writing that my Aunt put on the back from her visit identifying a few people and places. My Aunt passed away about seven years ago so I can't ask her about the people or writing on the photos.

Thanks
Marlene

Marlene,

You can scan in the photos and post them at the members forum and I can translate them for you.

Most likely the surname is Ostojic.

Sergej

You need to start a new topic in the SGS Member forum and attach the files to your post. If you put them in your Control Panel I cant access them ;-)

Sergej

Sorry I didn't realize there was an answer to my question...

My grandfather left Serbia in 1907 so it would be before 1907. My grandfather was born in 1879, grandmom in 1884 and they were married in 1902.
