Hello,
My grandmother immigrated to Youngstown, Ohio in 1913. Her name was spelled DURISH here, but I have a letter that I am having trouble getting translated that has the family name as DURIS or JURIS. My great aunt insisted that it was spelled Djuris, although I found the letters later that did not indicate such.
My grandmother's mother was a STRUHARIK and I cannot find anything to indicate where she could have been from.
My grandmother always said she would never forget how beautiful the Danube was and unfortunately never got to visit again.
I had my DNA testing done, so I know I have ancestry from this region for sure!
If anyone could help me with starting my European search, I would be grateful.
Thank you,
Jennifer
Hello and welcome.
Do you have some more info like dates etc? Documents from EllisIsland e.g.?
YEs, I would like a little bit more info please as well.
A place would be nice, as surnames are sometimes tied to certain places. It would save me a lot of work.
Regards,
Sergej
Thank you both for the offer to help. I am very excited as this line has been very hard to piece together.
The parents that immigrated were Paul Duris (DOB 2/8/1884; immigration 1910) and Mary Struharik Duris (DOB 1886). They married in 1903. Paul immigrated first and Mary came in 1913 came with my grandmother Mary (DOB 9/18/1903) and her sister Elizabeth (DOB 1/4/1911). They then had another daughter, Eni (Anne), in the US.
While I cannot find anything from Ellis Island, my grandmother's Social Security document has that she was born in Gložan, Bački Petrovac, South Bačka, Serbia, Yugoslavia. This also coincides with the letter that I have from what I believe is her grandmother's writing. I don't see how I can attach it here, but I would be thrilled to have someone look at it. I asked someone at Ohio State University if it could be translated and they said that it was written in an old world language, so it was not easily done.
I know that Paul Durish's parents were John and Mary Duris. He was the only child to immigrate here. His brothers were George and John Duris. Supposedly, one of the letters I have is my grandmother and her sister Eni giving permission for her uncles to sell their land in Glozan. Their sister Elizabeth passed away in 1955. My great Aunt Anne (Eni on her birth certificate) insists that the last name actually had a 'j' in it and no 'h' on the end until they got to Ellis Island. If it helps, I know that Paul Durish helped build the John Hus Slovak Evangelical Lutheran Church in Youngstown, so I would presume the same religious beliefs in Europe.
Mary Struharik's parents were John Struharik and Mary Krasnec. She had a bother John (known to us as Baci) that lived with my family in the US. Also a sister Elisabeth that did not immigrate to the US. I only know about Elizabeth from John's funeral books that have been handed down and John's obituary is the only place she is mentioned. I believe that Elizabeth married Andrew Meleg. Andrew Meleg had a daughter, also Mary, that John and Mary Struharik (her grandparents) raised when their daughter (thought to be Elizabeth) passed away when she was 2 years old. According to my family, the Struharik's and Meleg's did not get along. Mary's mother's name was never used. I actually have a picture of my great,great-grandparents together when Mary looks to be about 7 years old. When Mary was 14 years old, she was sent to the US and lived with my grandmother's family. I have have her documented at Ellis Island:
Mara Meleg
Arrival Date: 4 Oct 1929
Birth Date: abt 1913
Birth Location: Serbia, Republic of Serbia
Birth Location Other: cib boka
Age: 16
Gender: Female
Ethnicity/ Nationality: Servian (Serbian)
Port of Departure: Le Havre, France
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Mexique
John Struharik's obituary from 1966 also says he has a daughter Mary Divak in Yugoslavia, but I have not been able to find anything about her. I do have a picture sent from Europe that she looks to be in her late 20s with a gentleman that I would presume to be her husband.
There are many, many Struharik families in the area of Ohio that I am from, and I can find people's names from public records in the funeral books of my family, but I cannot make any connections as to how they were related here. I do not find any other Durish than my great-grandfather.
I hope any piece of this gives you any clues. I cannot express how much I appreciate you responding.
With Gratitude,
Jennifer
Hello Jennifer,
OK I see some options and possibilities here.
You should see the possibility to attach up to 4 files below the form you type in. If you can upload the documents in Serbian and that what you have I can check the writing. We'll take it from there 😉

Sergej
Thank you, thank you, thank you so much. I cannot express how excited and grateful i am . I have uploaded what I referenced in the above narrative. Please let me know if you have any questions for me. I certainly appreciate the assistance since I am positive I should have some roots still there. 🙂
I am trying to send some of the files again. Sorry,
Ok try again, I upped the size of attachments to 1,5MB's
Oh, they might be to big to send via mail as well. I don't know if you use Onedrive or Dropbox, but you can get a share link and post that here otherwise.
This file should upload now- thanks!
One more try for this compressed file- thank you.
OK, I will look at the files. One thing I can tell you that the surname should be spelled as: Djuriš or Đuriš(which is the same). So in English that would be pronounced phonetically as " jurish".
I'll let you know more when I have time to look at the other documents. Glad to see uploading things to the forums are active again.
Regards,
Sergej
