Greetings from Canada! I'm fairly new to this, and I'm not sure of all the procedures I should be following, so please forgive me if I make the occasional mistake. My maternal Grandparents were from Farkazdin, Serbia. My Grandfather was Milan Skerletov, and my Grandmother was Zivanka Matic. They emigrated to Canada in the early 1900's. I'm wondering who and where I should contact to see if any record of their birth exists. My cousin and I are trying to find as much information as we can. Would there be a Department of Vital Statistics in Zrenjanin? Any information would be extremely helpful, and greatly appreciated!

If you have the dates of birth you can write a letter to the archives of Zrenjanin (see links page). They can provide you with the data.

Regards,
Sergej

"you will never get an answer from church or record office ".

You will get plenty of responses if you ask the church for help in the right way( customary manner), and the state archives and municipal offices are oblidged by law to answer queries that they recieve in appropriate format ( an official query letter most have posted on their websites for which you have to pay them).

The downside is that in most cases if you ask via email or in English, you will only get response if you are lucky and find someone willing to indulge answering you of their own accord privately.

Anyone researching in Serbia can contact SGS RODOSLOVLJE here on the boards and receive accurate information how to contact the archives relevant for their research.

Anyone  contacting the Serbian Orthodox Church about records and information should probably read the section detailing how to do it posted here:

I do believe that the accurate information on how to contact archives is important and email queries in English  are not considered to be  an official channel which must be answered by them.

I forgot to add that if you are sending the official form to municipal offices for information from civil vital records, in most cases you  must document that you are the descendant of the person you are obtaining the birth/marriage/death ceritificate for - the information is considered confidential and is protected by privacy laws .

Emails are not considered normal for inquiries with the archives. This is something to take into consideration. As Jugoslava pointed out, Serbia has equal privacy laws as in Germany.

Sergej
