There is a very interesting story about my great grandfather that I am trying to verify. His name was Joseph Dakovich/Joca Gjakovic and he was born January 27, 1869. When he came to America in 1903 he listed his home as Stapar, Hungary. This is the story as it was told to me...

Joseph had a daughter Milana with his first wife who died in childbirth. Joseph later remarried my great grandmother Mildred (Milka) Mrjdenov who was born December 19, 1873. When she was pregnant with her first child, Albert, Joseph was arrested for something relating to his time in the military. He was in prison for over a decade. Albert died one day when Mildred was visiting Joseph in prison - Milana was babysitting. Some how Joseph got out of prison for medical reasons. He dicided it was time to move to America. Joseph & Mildred left, through Germany, in February of 1903. Milana decided not to go and lived in Stapar until she died at 88 years old. If my calculations are correct, this was around 1979.

I am looking for birth records for all involved, marriage records of both marriages, proof that Joseph was in the military and/or he was in prison, and death records for Albert and Milana.

This is my first attempt to do any research in Serbia and I appreciate any help.

Military records are hard to get, did you try the archives?
