Gorcevich is derived from Djordjevic. But as said again, there is more information needed such as a place of origin due to the changing of the name in relation with the immigration that took place.

Sergej

My name is Viki Gorcev.
My father was Milan A. Gorcev (dead)
My grandfather was Milan Gorc'ev. He arrived in Halifax, Canada in 1927, traveling from Yugoslavia.
He was born 2 April 1898 and he died Nov 1971.
He played the accordian and violin. He was a musician and recorded music for RCA Victor in the 20's and 30's. In 1927 he recorded in the city of Chicago. His stage name was Milan Pancevac.
He married Gizella Miller (Molnar)in Cleveland, Ohio in 1934ish and they had 6 children. Milan, Dorothy, Daniel, Diana, Juanita and Romona.
In 1941 He applied for SS# in Cleveland where he listed his father's name as
Gorcevich and his mother as Gizela Gavaler (my aunt said they called her the Spanish gypsy).
He states that his place of birth was Budapest, Hungary.
He signed his name Milan Gorc'ev Gorc'evich.
The story goes like this: Grandpa loved music. He played the violin all of the time. His mother hated that he spent so much time playing music instead of working and one day she broke the violin in half. (nothing is ever said of his father). He was so angry that he left home at about 13 years old and went to Romania. He returned and married and had a little girl (Vladina). Then he went to war and was gone for quite awhile. He was hurt real bad in the war and his dog tags were sent home to his wife. He had frostbite and a leg full of shrapnel.
When he finally arrived back home he found his wife had married again, thinking he had died in the war. He left and decided to come to USA and make a better life for himself.
My aunt thought that they lived in Pancevo and maybe that is why he picked his stage name to be Pancevac; also it is located near the Romanian border???
Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to whatever you can share and teach me.
Gorcevic is a Serbian name. If he signed the document with Milan Gorcev Gorcevic then most likely his fathers name was Gorcev.
Pancevo is 30 minutes from Belgrade (not close to the Romanian border), its an industrial city. The best thing you can do is to write the archives there (see message list topic).
It is very well possible they were Roma (Gypsies), because Gorcev is a Gypsy name. When you write to the arhives name his full name and his place and date of birth.

Sergej
Thank you Sergej for the clues.I appreciate it soooooooooo much!!!!!!!!!
When I said that Pancevo was not far from Romania, that was relatively speaking (compared to a lot of other cities, especially when you are about 13 years old).
What do you think 'Spanish gypsy' meant (when referring to his mother)?
What do you think of his 'stage' name (Pancevac)? Would it lead you to believe there was something connected to the city Pancevo?
What do you think of the possibilities of his being born in Budapest, Hungary?
What war do you think he fought in?
Was there such a thing as 'dog tags' in Serbija?
I can't thank you enough for your consideration and time in considering my questions and replying with your knowledge.!!!!!!!!!
Your friend,
Hello Viki,
I moved this thread to the Vojvodina forum since it fits here.
As to your questions.
1. SPanish Gypsy can mean anything, it is very well possible they were Gypries but you will need proof.
2. Pancevac literally means : someone from Pancevo, in the male form of the word
3. Born in Budapest? I don't know what does his birth certificates say?
4. Wars, most likely none since he was born after WWI and moved to the US before WWII
5. We have dog tags in Serbia yes.
Hope this helps. I think you will do best in writing the archives of Pancevo. Good luck.
Regards,
Sergej
Sergej,
Thank you again.
My Grandfather, Milan Gorcev, was born in 1898. It wasn't until 1927 that he arrived in USA.
What are the possible wars he could have fought in?
I don't have a birth certificate for him but on his application for a social security number he stated his place of birth was Budapest.
If your name was Djordjevic in Serbia, would you change the spelling to Gorcev when traveling?
I guess I'm not sure what name to put in searches. Should I continue to use all that I know or just the form he used?
Viki,
If he was born in Budapest then contact them with the info you have. Then see where that leads you.
Regards,
Sergej
