My great grandfather Peter Heberling immigrated from Palanka Yugoslavia back in 1903. I just found out this morning by accident the names of his siblings (with birthdays) and parents (birth and death dates). How should I go about finding decendants of the siblings or go farther back with the parents?

Hello Joanna,

You would be required to write to the archives in Smederevo since Palanka falls under their jurisdiction. They hold the birth and burial documents.

Their address:

Trg Narodnih Heroja 5
11420 Smederevska Palanka

Please state the full names and dates and as much other info that you can spare.
You could also try to write to the Catholic church since your ancestors were DonauSchwaben. You can also check our link page and see via the online phonebook if there is still family living there.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Sergej

How should I go about sending them a SASE for anything they find? Also, how do I go about finding the Catholic Church?

New situation now. Someone has sent me alot of the Heberling genealogy I needed. Now I want to find their descendants. How do you go about that with just a list of names and birthdates from Palanka? I'm new to all this international searching so please forgive all the questions! :)

Palanka is called today Smederevska Palanka and falls under the Smederevo area. Go to the online phonebook and try to find people with the same surnames.

Serbia knows a tight privacy law as Germany does. You can write people or call them. I dont know if you speak any German?

You can also try contacting the Donauschwaben community in Serbia, you can find their link at the link page.

As for the info you received, verify if there are any sources so you prevent any double work.

I've been to Feldenzer.com He did 'osb' lookups for me and sent me scans of everything I needed and more. The stuff he sent was from 1724-1900 I'd just like to find from 1900 to now or more detailed records of what I already have.

Do you think that the Palanka is the one located in Smederevo ?

I believe that the original comments in an Ancestry post to the Hungary board would indicate that it is Backa Palanka where she should be searching, not the Smederevo Palanka, which as far as I can see was never part of Hungary.

It's the Palanka that John Feldenzer's site is about since he had info on my family. Whichever Palanka that is.

it is Backa Palanka where she should be searching, not the Smederevo Palanka, which as far as I can see was never part of Hungary.

Robert,

Smederevo's Palanka has also a Donauschwaben community. If it would be Backa Palanka then one would have to contact the Novi Sad archives.

Its hard for me to tell without seeing any registration documents, but Feldenzers site also talks about Smederevo. Since both Palanka's still have a Donauschwaben community I guess it wouldn't hurt searching both of them. If they were from the Backa Palanka then she can access all documents through the LDS center I believe but you would have to ask them.

But please keep in mind that it wont go fast.

For map of the region go to the link page and see the Dr. Staedler map, its in German but you can switch to English.

Regards,
Sergej
