Postovani,

Andy

Hi Sergej/Blogdan,
I have again discussed their visit to "the village" with my parents. When they returned home they wrote to the Yugoslav Embassy in London with details of the place visited and their bad treatment by the authorities. They were advised to contact the Embassy in Splt. The reply was an apology saying that they had aroused a lot of suspician on their visit. In the late 80's what region would the Embassy in Split have covered? Despite meeting with granfathers friend's cousin I still feel the connection with him living in Croatia
Mother is also adamant that he was visited regulary by the Police in this country. I have(through close contacts)checked this. There is noone of the name recorded on the "Aliens List" - This again seems strange as it is known the the Police spoke to him in the early 50's when family members asked to visit. He declined. He always said that he broke all contact when he found they had become communist.
I do not know your country despite spending 6 months literally walking thousands of miles on line. Maksim Culumovic - Is this such a rare name?

Andy,

You mean the Brittish embassy in Split?
During WWII there were 3 major camps in what was the Socialist Federation of Yugoslavia, Partisans, Chetniks and Ustase. It is/was very political even untill today and it really depends when/who and how you ask people about it. Some emotions get up over it even today.

http://encarta.msn.com/encnet/refpages/search.aspx?q=chetniks
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chetniks
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ustase
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Partisans_%28Yugoslavia%29

These 3 groups fought each other during that era.

Yes Culumovic is a rare name, which is a good thing for research, it could be Jovanovic and more then halve of Serbia has that name :-p

Regards,
Sergej

Thanks Segej
I do understand about the three factions and feelings. If my parents were directed to the Embassy in Split does the mean Croatia is the focal point of my research as the Embassy were given the name of the village or would this Embassy deal with general enquiries throughout the former Yugoslavia.

Excellent news - after months of searching the house I have just found all of grandfathers ressetlement papers and aliens registration papers. There are quite a few that are in Serbian- would you translate if I upload them? What I can make out is that he was born in Brzani or another spelling is Brdzani in the province of Jalce - last known residence in the town of Jalce. Fathers name - Jova Culumovic and mothers name - Petra Lukic. Even his school is on the documents - Primori z(4) jarc - this may not be interpreted fully by myself. - Andy

Čulomović is a rare family name from Lika, Croatia. Briana could be Brinje, and there are plenty of waterfalls in that part of the country.
