I am just starting out trying to locate my fathers birth records and family history. I do know he was born in Apatin, Yugoslavia in 1940. Also i have a copy of his baptismal record.

Apatin falls under the archives of Sombor. You should write them with the details of the baptismal records. Depending on his religion you can also write the church in question. Use the search function on the forums to find the list of archives and religions.

Dear "Riedbauer,"

If your Apatin/Abthausen ancestors were German, you may be very interested in this village website hosted by DVHH - Donauschwaben Villages Helping Hands: www.dvhh.org. Go to the Exchange Network and click on the Volunteer Page. Beth Tolfree is the village coordinator for Apatin, and you can then click on her website.

You can learn many details about this village, and where to buy the newly-published Familienbuch Apatin in der Batschka 1750-1825, written by Jacob Schuy. The Familienbuch contains many birth, death & baptism record references of former residents, as well as some photographs and a wealth of other information. It is, however, written in German.

The village coordinator can do a lookup of your family names if you like. The book is expensive, but if you have many family members from Apatin, you may find it worthwhile to own your own copy.

Good luck with your research.

We tried contacting the DVHH on several occasions but never seem to get a reply, tried in English and German.
