My grandfather (Milo Kalabich/Poleksich?) immigrated to the US when he was 18 (in 1903)and family folk lore says he took his mothers maiden name (Kalabich) here in the US. The only hard facts I have are from a letter written to my grandfather from (we believe) his 1st cousin Lubo Poleksich who was living in Belgrade at the time of the letter (Mid 1950s). Lubo had two sons who went to medical school. One in France and one in Belgrade. There is a reference to a Captian Lazar Poleksich who at the time of the letter was living in Canada.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Did you check with Ellis Island?

Yes I have checked with Ellis Island. According to family oral history my grandfather left Monte Negro (he wa Serbian) prior to WW1 at his Mothers urging. This apparently caused a problem with his father and he an his uncle left via Turkey. Whe he reached the US he took his Mothers maiden name (Kalabic) due to the issue with his Father. I have his naturalization papers which gives the ship and arival time but when I check with the Ellis Islan records I can not find him or his uncle.

We do not know his father's surname but have a letter from (we believe his first cousin) written in the mid 1950's with the family surname of Polecksic.

I am trying to establish the true family surname prior to a trip to the area for further research.

Thank you for your input

Doug

The archives in Montenegro should have data, and perhaps depending on the source Family Search can yield some results as well. Check the link page, if you can't find it let me know.

Sergej

Hello Doug,

my name is Dimitrije Poleksic, and we are cousins. Not very close, but not a distant one, also.

First, some facts (in small portions):

Lubo Poleksich born 1889 in village Mokro near Savnik, died 1974 in Belgrade. He was Montenigrian war hero and his last position was in rank of colonel as adjutant of Yugoslavian/Serbian Royal family. He had two sons, both doctors. Slobodan Poleksich, he lives in USA. married, two daughters and one son.

Joko Poleksich, also doctor, PhD, recognized Yugoslavian neurosurgeon. Married, had a son and a daugther.

Lazar Poleksich born 1901 in Mokro near Savnik was captain in Yugoslavian/Serbian Royal Army. Durig WWII German army, captured him 1943, and sent him to Germany, possibly in concetration camp. After the WWII he ended in Canada.

And now the most interestig part:

Lubo's father was Joko.

Lazar's father was Janko.

Joko i Janko was brothers from the same father Djordjije (George). By the way, George was my grand grand father (father of my grandfather).

But !!! One of Lazar's brothers, also son of Janko was Mile (Milo) Poleksich. Born 1877 in Mokro, went to USA around 1903, to Denver, Colorado. Died 1960. Had two sons (Marko and Djordjije) and two daughters (Eva and Jelena).

Djordjije died in car crash. Marko and Eva stayed in Denver. Jelena went to LA.

I hope this will be helpfull...

Zdravo bio rodjače! (Stay sound!)

Thank you so very much! The information provided is very helpful. Is it possible to connect so we can discuss further.
I am Milo's only living grandson (Eva's oldest son)
