Ilija Tatalović

born 15 Nov 1884 in Drzenica

parents Mihailo Tatalović and Savka Evosevic

emigrated from Antwerp, Belgium 28 Mar 1903

arrived New York, New York 8 Apr 1903

indexed at Ellis Island site ( http://ellisisland.org/) as Tataloric (given name) Jlya (surname)

died 10 Aug 1946 Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA

I am trying to verify his birth and parents.  Though I know of no other family, it is possible that he had relatives in Gary, Indiana, USA, since he worked there around 1912.  He married Alžběta Františka Šámal (1885-1966) in Milwaukee 16 Jan 1910 in a Serbian Orthodox ceremony.

Can you tell us what you did thus far besides Ellis Island?

Thanks for the response.

Besides the Ellis Island information, I have done considerable work in the Milwaukee area, where he married and lived most of his life (except for a brief stay in Gary, Indiana around 1912-1913). I've posted what I found at World Connect: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=61blt&id=I26

I've found a number of places where he lists his place of birth as Drzenica (for example, WWII draft registration, naturalization petition), though never with a present day country like Croatia or Serbia. He named his first two children Michael and Savka (or Cecelia), and I believe they were named after his parents. On some documents, he listed his father's name as "Mihailo."

He never spoke to his children about his parents, his siblings, or his home town.
