I am looking for my mother-in-law's family. I can confirm that her grandfather came to America June 19, 1909 on Lusitania out of Liverpool, England with the name Alexa Koneff (later changed to Alex Kormushoff). His brother was already here in Steelton, PA USA using the name Dimko Koneff (later Kormushoff and came to America in 1907) and another brother listed in orginating country as Christo Kormushoff (came to America in 1910) All 3 brothers list Prilep as place of birth. I am trying to find any info about them when they were still in that area. I know a sister Mary came to America a few years after the brothers. Another sister stayed in the old country. My personal email is [email protected]
Hi,
Do you know why they changed their surname?
Prilep is in North Macedonia these days.
You might want to try contact the archives there: https://www.arhiv.gov.mk/index.php?j=3
The best that I can tell they were using their father's name as a last name. I've been able to find marriage licenses for Christo and Alex here in Pennsylvania with their father's name listed as Konef Kormushoff. But I cannot find any records of any of the family in Prilep. I will look at the archives that you provided. Family legend says that the church was burned (and I know that there was unrest in the area and several churches were burned). I am not finding any relations on ancestry.com either so I'm thinking there might have been another name at some point. I read on one site that Koneff would roughly translate to son of Kone... I don't know if that is true or not.
Yes, we had a fair amount of church burnings in the region over the past centuries. And the Balkans have always been a region of unrest.
Well if they used the surname Koneff it would've been spelled as "Konef". With an -a suffix for a female member of the family ~ Konefa
I checked the phonebook from Prilep but couldn't find any matches for you.
Do you have any documents from Macedonia that state the surname on it?
Regards,
Sergej
The only things I have is draft cards for WW1 and WW2 that lists their father's name. I found Alexa's record of arriving in the US that lists both last names. I found record of Alexa boarding in England but cannot find a single record of them in Prilep. They all list Prilep as place of birth. The younger brother was listed as person of contact for Alexa and was listed as being in Prilep.
Just checking to make sure. Do you know about this page and does any of the data ring a bell? I know its in German.

Also there is a link between Koneff and Kormushoff: http://www.pollitecon.com/html/ebooks/Macedonians-In-America.pdf page 204
In French: http://macedonia.kroraina.com/en/serafimovna/leregimeserbe.pdf page 19
In Greek, go figure: http://www.lithoksou.net/p/metanastes-ethnika-makedones-stis-ipa-stis-arxes-toy-20oy-aiona-1897-1924-2008
The name Koneff is also mentioned in the Slovanský Sborník, but doesn't lead anywhere.
So upon some research. The era that your ancestors left was during great turmoil in the region. A lot of migrations during that time. But, besides the archives I think you should also try the municipality and see what they have: https://www.prilep.gov.mk/ Google Translate: https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.prilep.gov.mk%2F
I will continue to do some searching in phonebook records I have in the mean time.

Sergej
