I have Serbian ancestry and am trying to find out about the origin or meaning of the following surnames as well as the Krsna Slava (family patron saint)of each family:

1 - Stanic or Stanich - I am thinking that the Krsna Slava is Srdjevdan (Sts Sergius and Bacchus), but am not totally certain.
2 - Njegovan or Negovan
3 - Vuksan - Perhaps something to do with wolf.....

I am doing some research in to my Serbian ancestry and would very much appeciate any and all help. Also, my apologies if I posted this thread in the wrng forum area.

Sergej,

Thanks for asking.

My mother and I are trying to trace our Serbian ancestry. Yes, one of the things I am interested in is the meaning (if any) of the names, but also the family saint (slava) as well. I am also interested in any other information regarding the families. I know my great grandmother was a Croatian Serb (she lived near the village of Masic at the time), she came to America around 1912. Her husband came to America a few years earlier. Her maiden name was Vuksan and she took the name Njegovan after marriage. Her husband (Njegovan) died after she came to America and she remarried a man with the last name of Stanic (or Stanich), who was my great grandfather. All I was able to find about Stanic is that many are from the Podgorica, Crna Gora area. Perhaps from one of the Highland clans.

I am really hoping someone can help with more information on the origin or some background on these families.

Thank you.

Check out the articles on the site, you can use the search fucntion for it as well. There is an article that explains the meaning of surnames.
I can tell you that if you want to do research in Croatia that you should have a lot of patience. A lot of documents and churches were damaged during the last war and a lot of information is lost or really hard to find.

Most names can be derived. e.g. Vuksan or Vuk a normal Serbian first name comes from the word vuk, meaning wolf.
Stanich, or Stanić is a patronym and can come from e.g. Stanoje a comon first name. If you have some more details I can provide you with more detailed info. Feel free to search the forums and articles, there are a lot of similar requests.

Regards,
Sergej

My Great Grandfather was also a Vuksan and he came from around Gospic, Croatia. I wonder if we are related.
