Hello, all. My name is Mira Mihajlovich; my father was Lazar (Lou) Mihajlovich (b. Detroit, MI, USA 1925 - d. 1994) and my mother is Roxanda (Roxy) Vrebac Mihajlovich (b. McKeesport, PA, USA 1925). I am looking for any descendents of my paternal grandfather whose name, I believe, was Milorad Mihajlovic. The Ellis Island website indicates that my grandmother Zorka (b. 1900) and a "Milovac" Mihajlovic (b. 1896) emigrated from Erdut, which I understand is now in Croatia, in November 1921. By 1925, they were divorced (or he just left) and we don't know what happened to Milorad, whether he stayed in the US (as "Michael") or returned to then-Yugoslavia. I also know that they had a child (son) while still in the old country, who unfortunately died. My family celebrates Sveti Jovan as slava (January) but I am not sure if that was the Mihajlovic slava or if my grandmother Zorka just followed her family's slava after Milorad left.
Zorka Mihajlovich was a Culic by birth. Her mother was Danica and her father was Stefan. Her oldest brother, whose name I believe was Rade, remained in Europe while the remainder of her family (brothers Mladen and Cajica?/Casper and sister Leposava/Lillian) came to this country. However, the records I found for Danica, Stefan, and Mladen Culic from Ellis Island say they came from Stopar. None of the Serbian people I have met in the United States know where Stopar is or what Stopar is. Does anyone on the board know where they might have been talking about?
Finally, my maternal grandfather emigrated from Bosna - his name was Nikola (Nicola) Vrebac. He became a US Citizen in 1944; I thought I had his birth certificate, but cannot find it now, but if I recall correctly, it was in Dubica or something like that. My mother never met any of his sisters or brothers (if he had any) - her parents divorced when she was young and she did not live with her father until after she turned 18.
I am planning on visiting Serbia (and perhaps the other countries in that area) for the first time next summer. I will be 50, and was hoping to find where my grandparents came from and to meet any relatives I might have who still live in "the old country." I looked in the database of surnames and did not find Mihajlovic or Culic. I forgot to look for Vrebac.
Any help that I can get would be greatly appreciated!
Hi Mira.
I will look into this tomorrow and get back to you.

Sergej
Mira,
Stopar is a small village. I will find it on the map for you.
Are you currently residing in the States? Let me know there are ways for you to look through archival documents from Croatia where you are now before you travel down to Serbia.

Sergej
Here are some possibilities of Stopar:

Thanks for the information, Sergei. I live in Normal, IL right now, so would be traveling out of Chicago next summer.
Sergie, would any pictures I have scanned help in my search? Should I post on other areas of this website as well?
Thanks!
You can post those in the SGS member forum together with other personal info you dont want in the public forums.

Sergej
Thanks, Sergej. (I finally got the spelling correct!)
My mother found her father's baptismal information. Nikola Vrebac was born on May 15th, 1894 in Komlenac, son of Mile and Simeuna (Miljatovic) Vrebac who were famers living in house #14. He is listed on the baptismal as the 2nd child of Mile and Simeuna, but my mother thought he'd told her he was the "smallest" or "youngest" of 6, including two sisters. I thought perhaps both could be right, if Simeuna were his 2nd wife. I have also posted this message in the Bosnia forum.
Thanks for any help. I have found one Vrebac family still living in Komlenac, so I am going to try to write them with a help of my brother's fiance, who is from Nis, Serbia.
Mira,
Do you know how to create a family tree in e.g. PAF?
Regards,
Sergej
Sergej, I tried to create a family tree and attacg it to an e-mail in the "members only" section of this website. I have one for my mother and one for my father, so they are separate under the surnames of my grandparents.
We can get you on the online pedigree system at htpp://www.rodoslovlje.com/rodoslov ; its easier and you can get people to check out and see if they know anybody. Let me know if you want to use it.
Regards,
Sergej
Sure, Sergej, that would be great. I just found out that my grandfather Mihajlovic had one sister (only one and no talk of brothers), who had one daughter, who didn't have any children. I posted this information on the Croatian message board with her surname.
Ok I activated it: http://rodoslovlje.com/rodoslov/surnames.php?tree=13
