I am looking for father's family. Nick Petrovic b April 1887 Belgrad. Came to US in 1907-1910?? I have a letter that was in my fathers belongings written in 1961 from his Nephew, Milovan Petricevic or Petzicevic ... hard to make out the letters from the return on the envelope. The nephew was in Mentenegro YU. He wrote to my father using the name Baco R Petzicevic (or the Petricevic?) so I assume that was my father's name before coming to US.. I thought he was Nick Petrovic who changed to Nick Petrovich. I was not close to my father so I have very few memory clues to go from. The letter gives some names of the nephews family. I was hoping to find more information out by finding any family members that might still be there or if they can tell me did any of the others come to U.S. I have looked on Ellis Island records for Nick, Baco, all spellings but nothing comes up that makes me think it is him. Any help would greatly be apprecaited. Thank you for reading.
Hello Ann,
You will most likely need to do research in the archives of Belgrade or in the city hall. You will need Serbian citizenship for that or permission from the minestry of culture.
Most likely you still have family in Serbia-Montenegro. If you have a date/place and name you can start researching.
Do you have any old documents that have info that might help?
Regards,
Sergej
I have very little to go from. I'm US citizen so getting to Serbia is not very likely even if I could find relatives who would look. Parents divorced and raised by my mother.
I have one old letter of 1961. I think my father's name was Baco Petricevic (or maybe Petzicevic) back in Montenegro. The letter is from Milovan Petricevic (or Petzicevic) in Bogetici Montenegro. He calls Baco uncle. He mentions names of Rade, Shilka, Nade, Desa (or dahsah),Rolesah.
Baco came to America in 1907. He was born April 28, 1887 (or 1890) in Belgrad. We knew he changed his name coming to America but always thought he changed the last name to Petrovich. This letter is what makes us believe he was Baco R Petricevic.
The card from death says birthdate April 28, 1887. I have found a Raco Pedricevich age 17 on Ellis Island records. This could be him with wrong misspelling. But that would make his birthdate April 28 1890. The obituary from the death says his father was Risto and his mother Stana (maiden name Rosandic). This information is just what someone in the family turned in but it was not for sure. They didnt seem to know for sure.
I dont know how to start researching since I am not Serbian or have family that I know of to ask.
Name Baco R Petricevic (or Petzicevic... handwritting on envelope not sure if r or z.)
Place of birth; Belgrad (this is just what I was told all my life.. he lived in Centinje, and had family in Bogetici are the other cities I know of he had connection to)
Date of Birth: April 28 1887 is what I always thought but if he came to US in 1907 and was only 17 as the ship records show, then his birth is April 28 1890.
Parents: I'm not sure I think Risto and Stana Petricevic (or Petzicevic).
She may have been Stana Rosandic before her marriage.
Where do I start the research at? Who can I write?
Thank you for reading.

I have read ALL the post that are in English. Cannot read the others.
My father was born in Belgrad and I noticed that on one of the other post it said that if born in Belgrad and know the name and date it would be in the Belgrad Archives and for that person to ask around to find more information to find a name and date.
I HAVE name and date.
Would you be able to tell me who could look in the records of Belgrad births on April 28, 1887 and April 28, 1890 for Baco R Petricvic.
I have written to the above address in Cetinje. But there are no BIRTHs in the city. Only that my father at one time lived there.
We dont have researcher active now in Serbia untill further notice. ( Even if we had you couldnt use it because its for members only)
You can try writing the archives, but I cannot garantuee that they will respond.
You have all the required data so it they could find his records if they are not destroyed.
"Looking" into the archives isn't that easy. Nothing is microfilmed so its more research then a simple quiry e.g. as you would on www.familysearch.org
