I am looking for further information on Maria Herke, born October 20, 1888. I have found a baptism record for her, from the Saint Teresa Roman Catholic Church in Subotica.

But church records seem to not be available after 1900 or so, and I'd like to see if I can find a marriage or death record of her.

Any suggestions on where I can search further would be appreciated. I am not sure which archive would possibly hold more information on her.

Thank you.

May I ask what the source is?
Records after 1900+ can be found in the municipal center or at the church itself due to privacy laws.

Sergej

Thank you for the reply, Sergej.

The source is the Kalocsa electronic archives of Roman Catholic church records for Hungary, at http://archivum.asztrik.hu/?q=en

I am still trying to understand when the church records end and the civil records begin. Is it generally 1900 through all of Serbia? Is it different for the Vojvodina area?

If I were to write the archives, my understanding is I would first write the regional archive (Vojvodina) to ask if they can confirm records exist, and then write a letter to the archives in Subotica asking if they can send me a copy of any records for Maria Herke? Or would the archives in Subotica only grant me access in person to view records in their reading room?

Thanks for any clarification you can provide.

It varies and depends on the church and the state of that specific parish as well. Back in the early 1900's the borders changed and as is with the whole region the administrative state of archives and such suffered from it. Yes, you can write to the archives in Subotica. But chances are you will need someone there in person. I don' know if you have?

Sergej

Thanks, Sergej. I don't know anyone that lives in Subotica, so I will at least try to write the archives, when time permits - and see what they say.
