The Markus family I am researching is Serbian Orthodox and has been for many generations. Any idea regarding the origin of this Surname? Thank you for helping! Judy

PS: Love the website!

Hi,

Thank you. The Markus family I think is mixed Serbian and German. What place are they from in your family tree so I can direct you to the nearest district archive?

Regards,
Sergej

Dragi Sergej, My Markus family has been in the Vojvodina area for many years - Botschar, Boscar, now Bocar, Serbia and Montenegro. The related and unrelated families of Markus, just in Bocar, refer to themselves as Serbian in all documents - Ellis Island, Military and Serbian Orthodox Church records. I am trying to find a link with the ancient Markus name of Serbia. Sincerely, Judy

Zdravo Judy ;-)

Its possible that it is the same family as the Markus that originated from Boka Kotorska around the 13th century, but it would be speculation without a pedigree to support it. Markus is also a German surname. Now I dont know if your pedigree contains Markus from Montenegro but if it does you need to find a the person that makes the link to Montenegro and then go to the Montenegrin archives.

Pozdrav,

Regards,
Sergej

Dear Sergej, Fantastic! May I ask where you located the name MARKUS in the 13th Century? I would love to do a little research regarding MARKUS in
Boka Kotorska. Thank you for the help, Sergej! Sincerely, Judy

One of the books that I have makes a reference to the archives of Montenegro so you would really have to contact them with your pedigree and see what comes up. There are multiple families with the same surname not all related to each other.

Sergej

Dragi Sergej, I have never heard of this book but would love to know more about it. Is there any way I can get some information regarding this book and the various list of Markus names? May I ask how one would contact the Archives of Montenegro? (If you have this mentioned on your site, I have overlooked it.) Hvala for the great help! Judy

Hi,

Well it makes a reference to the archives of Montenegro and nothing more then that so you will have to do deep research into that one.

ARHIV CETINJE
UL; NOVICE CEROVICA 2
81250 CETINJE

This is the address of the Montenegrin archives.

Good luck.

Regards,
Sergej

Dragi Sergej, I did find a Markus who lives near Kosovo and works as an Icon painter. I was able to reach him through his website and ask him about the Patron Saint for his family of Markus. It was St. George. Our Markus family is St. Nicholas. I will keep trying to connect with Montenegro. If you have any way to reach Jovan Markus, who writes for the Archives of Montenegro, please let me know. Hvala! Judy

There is a template letter in the members section that you can use to write the archives.

Dear Sergej, I am a little confused about which archives would hold the birth certificates of Padej and Bocar. We have mentioned Zrenjanin and Novi Sad (Vojvodina) so I am now uncertain as to which one I should contact. Thanks, Sergej! Judy
