Forum
I have posted in the public section of this forum, but wanted to attach pictures. My "Majka," was born Zorka Culic in Stapar, I believe. She was married to a Milorad (or Milovac) Mihajlovic from Erdut, Croatia sometime before or during WWI. Ellis Island documents list his name as Milovac, but my father's baptismal certificate lists his name as Milorad. Apparently, Milorad's father was Filip Mihajlovic.
Zorka's parents, Danica and Stefan Culic, came to the US with other children - Kajica (sp? - my dad called him "Casper" in English); Leposava; and Mladen. The oldest son, Rade, remained in the old country (I met him briefly in the 1960s). He supposedly "crossed a valley" to marry off Zorka to Milorad. Zorka and Milorad had a son in the old country who unfortunately died. I would like to find marriage, baptismal, and death certificates from churches or a government agency, if possible.
I am traveling to Belgrade this summer and would like to make trips to the areas where my grandparents came from. I would like to know if I have Mihajlovic or Culic relatives still in Croatia or Serbia as well. I understand there is one Culic listed in a phone book as living in Stapar, and several in nearby Sombor. I do not know about Mihajlovic, because it is a more common name, I guess. Any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated.
First we need to make an inventory and you need to make contact with people before you g down there. Do you have a pedigree file?

Sergej
Nope, I don't have a pedigree. I'll look into it and try to create one. My brother's fiance is from Nis and she has agreed to translate letters for me so that I can send them. I have drafted the letter to the Vrebac family that is left in Komlenac and attached Nikola's picture. I e-mailed her the letters this morning. (I also wrote for the sole Culic left in Stapar that I could find and the sole Mihajlovic left in Erdut that I could find.) I don't have a copy of the baptismal certificate (I think my mom does), but would make a copy and include that as well when I send it.
I wanted to start searching now as I plan on being in "Stari Kraj" July 1 - July 15 of 2008. I do not want to surprise anyone, I just want to find out where my ancestors came from. Thanks!
I did a chart for my father going back as far as I can go. Unfortunately, it doesn't go very far. That's why I need some help.
Sergej, would it help to translate my requests into Serbo-Croatian, since I am looking more for help from "Stari Kraj"
Thanks.
Mira,
You should write to the archives in Stapar. Most likely they have certificates there that mention more info on relatives: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stapar
