I am working on family genealogy and would like to get any information about Milan V. Jurich (or Djuric). He was born in Belgrade in 1916 and served as an officer in the Serb army during WWII. He came to the United States sometime in the mid to late 1950's and married my Aunt, Mildred Pejakov in Cincinnati in 1949. I know he lived in Detroit when he first came to the States, and I believe he may have lived in NYC as well. The only other thing I know is that he had a brother, name unknown. At present I am getting his death certificate which will have listed his mother's maiden name.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I think it would be prudent to, once you receive the death certificate, to repost in this thread. The more information the easier it becomes for us to assist.

Sergej
If he was born in Belgrade and you know the exact birth date, name fo the father, name of the mother and her maiden surname we can help you obtain his official birth certificate, which will have information on date and place of birth of his parents. Then if they were also born in Serbia ( today) we can obtain same document for them, or if they were from elsewhere direct you how to continue your research.
As an army officer he must be registered in military records but these are only available to be researched on site in Army Archive in Belgrade, Serbia. I will look around if there is any public information on his military service around and let you know.
Please post any information you have once you know more.
I just received Milan Jurich's death certificate. He was born in Belgrade on March 17, 1916, Fathers name was Vojin D. Jurich, mother's name was Zora Vasikic. He died in Ohio on September 13, 2005.
I hope with this additional information I will be able to find out more.
thank you

Yes, that information is enough to start your research and you should next aim for his birth record from Belgrade. I will make a few phone calls next week to see if we can help you navigate around the red tape to do that. Privacy laws in Serbia make all information from civil birth registers not older than 100 years protected and you may need proof of relation to obtain it. Other than that there are church records which are not subject to these laws, and you should contact Serbian Orthodox Church and ask if they can help:

I just found out that Milan Jurich was in the Serbian Air Force as a captain. He attended the military Academy and was first a navigator and then a pilot. He was captured by the Nazis and was held in a prison camp in Hamburg for four years.
What sort of proof of relation would be acceptable? The only thing I can think of is a notarized letter from my Aunt, Mildred Jurich - my mother's sister. Would that be OK?
I responded to this some time ago with the information you requested and never heard back from you. What would the next steps be?
