My surname is ZERKICH (English spelling) I would like to know where this name originated. My late father as well as I were born here in America . My late grandparents both spoke Serbian. My father spoke English. My grandparents and my father were not sure how to spell the surname in English. So my father when he was very young in grade school asked the teacher who spelled it ZERKICH as well as several other ways. My father accepted that spelling (ZERKICH)and used it from that point on. Neither my grandparents nor my father were sure of its origin. Please tell me as much as you can. My father even said the name might have a German origin. PLease help!! Thank You

Hi,

Please go to Ellis Island first and check the immigration papers of the ancestor that came to the US. That way we can tell for sure the correct spelling of the name.

Regards,
Sergej

Your family's name could have been spelled Zrkich. When my grandfather Mate Filipovich came from Serbia to America in 1913 he was coming to visit Josip Zrkich who was living in Galesburg, IL. Any relation to you?

Perhaps in the US but not here. Again, I recommend Ellis Island.

Sergej
