Looking for history of my grandparents - where they came from (in Hungary); why they left; was there any family left behind; and why their names are spelled 6 different ways in all the research I have done. Anyone out there know about Szolyva, Hungary early 1900's? Anyone see or hear of or have the name Pinzelik, Pinzalik, Pinezelik, Pinzolek, Pinzelek, Penchik? or the names Griga, Dzamka or Semko (my grandmother's maiden)?

welcome :)

I have to admit, that history of the town Szolyva is very interesting.  I found that only in 20th Century, the town was a part of four different country Hungary, Czechoslovakia, SSSR and Ukraina nowdays. If you take in consideration that in all that countries, speak four different languages, each variation with names is for expected. :)

Did you try to find answers in Ukraina?

Tell me all you can about the city when it was Hungarian. Before 1912.

Do you know where I can research records from that time? Or are they all gone when the other countries took over?

The link you included didn't work, can you send it again?

Thanks.

Robert

- all information from after immigrating from ship manifests and censuses is to be considered UNCONFIRMED until you can verify  everything - names, surnames, ethnicity, religion, parish and place of origin in the original records from the old country.

- surnames spelled in several variants in the ORIGINAL records before emigrating for people from Hungarian ruled part of the Austria-Hungary empire are conseqhence of  - in most cases for the people who were not ethnic Hungarians - of  non-native languages that were used for official record keeping - Latin was used in church in military records, Hungarian was used in church and civil vital records as well as for travel documents, German was and Hungarian language were used for military records....you can read on that here:

http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en/documentation/magyarization-serbian-and-other-ethnic-surnames-hungary

I cannot assist you with pointing where to look further without reviewing the documents you have - ship manifests, naturalization statements, information which religion your ancestors were affiliated with or if they settled and lived in an ethnic community / were members of ethnic associations.

I looked at your website.

How can someone do the research of everything is different - spellings, locations, available documents? It is so difficult.

I have created a webpage with all of the info that I have and all of the documents.

Any help you might suggest would be appreciated.
