I am looking for a few things on my great grandfather and could use some help. He was born in Meljani, Slavonia 1865. I can't find Meljane on any map. If I could i might be able to find the Serbian church that he was baptisied at. My greatgrandfather was in the Austro-Hungarian military. I think he seved in a serbian unit, Commanded by a Serbian General. supposedly My Greatgrandfather was well decorated for heroism. How could I find out more about his service? From his age and events of the time I believe he fought against the Bulgarians in the short war of 1895. How could I find out? What archives would i look for? Also his Father died in Slatina, Slovenia 1876. How could I find where he was buried? Did the Serbs in that area have there own cemetaries? How could I narrow my search? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Well there are 2 of them, actually 3. A Meljani in SLADOJEVCI and a Gornji Meljani & Donji Meljani ( http://www.fallingrain.com/world/HR/0/Gornji_Meljani.html )
Now the good thing is that they are all in the same area so you just need to contact 1 archive with a little bit of luck. These places today are in Croatia. As you stated correctly they used to be part of Hungary.
The archive you will need to contact is:
Državni arhiv Osijek
Kamila Firingera 1 31 000 Osijek
Croatia
e-mail: [email protected]
I will check out Slatina to see if there is anything there. I hope this at first helps a bit.

Sergej
Thanks Sergej, I'm sure this info will get me moving again. I really appreciate how promt you are.
I guess you already know it, but in any case: there's a huge amount of microfilm in FHL on the Austrian (austro-hungarian) military, which could be useful for you.
Also you might like to take a look at these links:
