Earlier research from my cousin has provided some details of my Ruthenian roots and I would like to establish the connections to the Papuga name both here in the USA and in Vojvodina and Croatia. What has been documented is that my great-great grandparents Janko and Marija Papuga had two sons in the 1830s: Mihal (b.1830) and Johannes "Janko" (b.1839). Marriage records in Ruski Kersestur apparently show that when Johannes "Janko" Papuga was 18 year old in 1858, he married 17 year old Maria Sabadosh from Kucura. I do not have a copy of the marriage records, just relying on my cousins research.
The Johannes "Janko" Papuga (1839-) family moved southwards to Bačinci, Srem in 1883, the same year that his only daughter, Marija, was born. According to Danil Papuga (1912-87), who lived in Bačinci in 1982 and had a farm at the base of Frushka Gora), Janko and his wife Marija first lived with their seven children (Janko, Djura, Dionisiji, Michael, Fedor "Ferko", Petar and Marija) all in one house. After awhile, they built a whole series of houses on the same street, where many of their their descendants might still live.
Mihal Papuga (1830-) married (wife's name unknown) and had 5 children (Andrei, Djura, Janko, Mihal and Stefan).
Andrei Salonski, Maria Varga and their family moved to Bačinci about the same time as the Papugas, but from the town of Kucura. Andrei had three daughters, Melana (1875-1936), Marija & Anna. Melana Salonski married Fedor Papuga and they are my grandparents. Fedor's name has also appeared as "Teodor", they came to the USA in 1900.
Marija Salonski married a man named Toth, and moved to Detroit, Michigan.
Anna Salonski married Mishko Cizmar, and remained in Bačinci with her children Febrona (1898-), Djura, Melana, Silvester, Andrea & Gabrina (1910-) until her death in 1970.
If anyone could help me locate sources to help fill in the blanks it would be much appreciated. Any additional information or connections to the Salonski, Varga, Sabadosh Toth and Cizmar families would greatly help, without knowing any more names or dates I am at a standstill and would only be guessing at any connection I find through Internet sources. Thank you.
Mark Papuga
