Good afternoon,

I am interesting in finding relatives with my surname that may be present in Razvodje, Dalmatia. My Grandfather Luka Pokrajac, was born in 1887 in the Razvodje area. I know that I have a cousin, Nikola, that currently lives in the area. Does anyone have any history on the Pokrajac surname, where the clan began. From what I've always heard it means "near the mountain" or something like that. My grandmother's name was Mara Travica, she was born in 1884 in an area close to Razvodje. Does anyone have any family history on the Travica name?

Thanks,

Luke Pokrajac

Hey Luke,

There is an article on Wikipedia (search for "Surname Pokrajac") about the possible roots of our last name.

This is the link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Pokrajac/Surname_Pokrajac

Tomo Pokrajac

Tomo,

Thanks! I've seen that article in Wikipedia before, that is actually the most information available on our last name. My father always says that there were a bunch of Pokrajac's in the phone book in Belgrade, but I always thought that it was a pretty uncommon Serbian name. I have a cousin Bogulub that lives in Canada, I see that is where you're writing from.

Luke,

Please read the articles in the Learning Center, just start at your gf and then backtrace. You will automatically find the person who assumed the surname.

Regards,
Sergej

I was wondering if anyone of on this message board of serbian ancestry has completed genetic testing to determine their paternal haplotype lineage. My father's line is an I1B1 P37 haplotype which is very prevalent in the balkans, especially in Dalmatia and Croatia. My mom's father is also a p37 haplotype but he was from Slovenia.

Hi Goran,

Nice to see that another Pokrajac joined us here :-)

Do you know how many Pokrajac's are still in Drnis area? (Razvodje is close to Drnis, correct?) I heard that there is a village named Pokrajac's in the Drnis area. Is that true?

PS. If you prefer I can write in Serbian/Croatian/Bosnian language!

Tomo.

Luke,

Do you speak any of our languages?

Hey Tomo,

Hvala, Gosh, I wish my dad was here from Pittsburgh to help me out with the translation...Unfortunately, I was never taught serbian growing up...other than a few choice words, LOL!! It sounds as though these fellows might be some relations of ours. My cousin Nikola is still over in the Razvode area from what my dad has said.

Luke
