For awhile now Ive been trying to find the true roots of my family. As I live far away from my homeland, I am also separated from any hard copy records that might exist of my roots. For last 100 years or so, my family has resided in Banija, Croatia. As far as I know theres only two or three families left that I have relations with spread around the world. There is some speculation that Meandzija surname comes from Montenegro. If anyone can point me to the right direction on where I could do some research, or perhaps help me with this, it would be very much appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
Hello Stojan,
Well its not that easy. The region has been hit by civil war as you most likely already read in other posts a lot has been damaged. The problem with this is that we still don't know how much is lost because a lot of people still need to do genealogical research. My best advice is to check with the archives directly or to contact the LDS Family History Library Centers because the Croatian archives are microfilmed. This gives you an advantage. So what you need to do is start with your father, gfather etc. and trace back as far as you can.
As to the general origin of surnames. Its possible but there are a lot of surnames out there that are the same and that are not related in any way so be cautious not get the wrong info.

Sergej
