A while back in this thread Sergej mentioned the LDS microfilm for the Orthodox Church at Smokovic, which by the way does not appear to have been part of the Croate Militargrenze, refer to map as found at Srpska Mreza
You mentioned that the name changed at the turn of the century, which I am guessing was the beginning of the 1900s. Those microfilm records may show a relationship between the two names if it occured during that period. Here is what the LDS has available, which you may order and rent at one of the over 2,000 Family History Centers worldwide:

As you can see birth records cover they years from 1826 to 1899. I have rented (cost $3.50 USD) several films and always found them invaluable. Also in light of the fact that the LDS has films this indicates the National Archives should have them in Zagreb (just visited the archives in Oct 2005). And if you should have the need I know of a reputable researcher from Zagreb who could search there.

Ok by doing further research I have discovered "Macure" were indeed a tribe in Montenegro that migrated west to 2 areas. in the Knin-Dalmacija area AND as far west as Slovakia. Its interesting to note that even the ones in slovakia have till to this day kept the Orthodox Religion. There are atleast 80 surnames in Slovakia that go by Macura.
This pretty much solves my question, about where my ancestors originated from, IF it is true that Prostran derived from Macura. So I am pretty much now just trying to find some solid proof that this is the case.
Here is some interesting web page with surname Kužet, but interesting is that they belong to tribe Mataruga. Whyteout, please read what they saying about their migration. My teory that Macure belongs to Mataruga clan can be true.
Furtermore, let see what said A. and V. Miljanic in their book about Montenegrin surnames.
Macura - Orahovo (na Mlinu); u Crmnici. U Piperima i Bratonožićima.
For Piperi as well as Vasojevici, the saint guardian is Saint Arhangel Mihailo! I believe that Mataruge accept this saint and try to asimilate to clan, but it was not easy. Confrontations within Mataruge and other clans was never stop.
I believe that Macure belongs to Mataruge clan, and they migrate to Dalmatia after constant confrontation with other clans. Mostly with Drobnjaci and Vasojevici.
When they come to Dalmatia they keeped their old Surname, some of them changed surname like other brotherhoods in that time.
interesting theory brane, but it is less likely we originated from them and not macure, because the surname Macura IS popular throughout the area wheras the other tribe is less visible...
my mom's husband is a prostran and well informed on the family. the name is of serbian origin i know. and according to him macura clan descends from a japanese man who moved to the area and married a serbian woman. the exact details i dont remember but will try to find. he knows the original japanese name and if you think about it it sounds right.
Interesting, I would love to hear more about this for sure. Looking forward for more information.
Regards,
Sergej
Interesting teory, but I do not believe that they have conection with Japanese. There are so many theory, and I prefer theory that Macure emigrate from Montenegro. Maybe I am on the wrong way.
I would still like to see any info you can find. Hell, we have Chinese even in the smallest villages of Serbia these days. Makes me wonder that if the story is true why he actually went to Montenegro?
Regards,
Sergej
Wow sorry I've been away for such a long time but I've been busy. Well basically I've taken in the theory that we were of Macure who came from the Vasojevici tribe in Montenegro, but that Japanese theory is um....interesting to say the least. What is your mom's husbend's name? where is he from?
I found reliable information that Macura family came from tribe Bratonožići, from Montenegro, more exact from Higlands area.
Bye,

Sredinom trece decenije proslog veka u selu Busije kod Bos. Petrovca je bila jedna kuca Macura. Doselili su se 1879. godine iz Kistanja. Tamo su bili kmetovi manastira Krupe.
