My great-Grandfather Lajos (Louis) Kern was born in 1883 in Futak, Hungary (now Futog, Serbia). He married (I believe in Budapest around 1909) a French lady named Suzanne Rennesson (born 1886). He joined the French Foreign Legion in 1914 (never became a French citizen though). I am not sure where to look for birth records / marriage certificates or military records. I am told via family members that his first language was German and that he may have come from the Kern line in Germany..
Any ideas on where to look for more information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Alistair

Hello Alistair,

Your should contact the archives in Novi Sad for starters. If he joined the Legion and finished his tour he did have French citizenship though and the Legion has good record keeping. There is/was a large German population in Vojvodina so its possible he was German or Austrian for that matter. Please read the FAQ and let me know if you need more assistence, membership would be an option.

Regards,
Sergej
