Hi, my name is Lauren Yankovich and I am trying to locate any family I may have in Serbia. My great grandfather, George Yankovich (could be spelled differently in Serbia) came to america i think around 1900-1910. Once in America he settled in Pennsylvania and married a woman by the name of Smilja (originally from kikinda, serbia). I believe when George came to America he came alone, but am not sure. I have searched numerous records to try and find something, but I cannot find anything. If you have any ideas on what else I could search or any clues, please let me know. Thank you!

Hi Lauren,

The correct spelling in Serbian would be Janković.
Did you check with Ellis Island or do you have any birth data on where he was born? That way it will help narrow down your search. The surname is derived from the name Janko, which is a comon name that can be found all over Europe.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Sergej

I found out more information. My great grandmother's name was Smilja Milvaljisin (Mihaljisin). She is from Kikinda. She arrived to America in 1909 on the ship named Alice. She met her brother here in America. His name was Mihalov. Her father Cvijen Mihaljisin remained in Kikinda. I would love to find out some kind of information about Cvijen. Perhaps Smilja had more than one brother Mihalov. And I would love to get information on her mother, etc. Perhaps birth records? Any ideas on where to look next? Again, thank you for the help!

You would have to write the archives in Kikinda and approach the churches there. Most likely family that remained behind are still living there.

Sergej

Thanks, Sergej. I actually found in the phonebook two Mihajliein's living in Kikinda. I received their addresses and would like to send them a letter. However, I am not sure how to address the envelope. Is there some kind of zip/postal code that I need to include? Here is one of the addresses:

Mihajliein
Josifa Paneiaea 1/2
Kikinda

I know this is a pretty elementary question, but I really want to make sure the letter gets there. I appreciate any help you could give. Thanks so much!

Lauren
