I have a birthplace listed as Kukuyevci, Austria for Andrew J. Hirschberger born 2 August 1894 but cannot find anything beyond that. He immigrated to USA in 1911 but I believe he left before that date. My father and his siblings were baptized and raised Lutheran as are their offspring. I have heard my parents talk about him being fluent in several languages, possibly merchant marine and I know that he worked as a general laborer once coming to the US. The primary language spoken in the home was German but all were quite fluent in English. Also there are a couple of name spelling variations used in the family: Hirchberger, Hirshberger.
This person is my grandfather and died in 1955 about a year before I was born so that is all the information I could dig up on the family. It took me all this time to find the town since I was told the name but not the spelling of it.
I do hope someone has some information for me so I can trace the family beyond my grandfather. Any help is much appreciated!
Thank you so much!
Did you check immigration documents at Ellis Island?

Sergej
"Also there are a couple of name spelling variations used in the family: Hirchberger, Hirshberger."
this are "americanized" variants and misspellings of the german name Hirschberger (deer-mountainer).
"Church books for Kukujevci are at St.Michaels-Werk church in Vienna." must be a not correct info, i don´t know such a church in Vienna and why should they have the books? http://www.dvhh.org/syrmia/village/index.htm
