Hello, my name is Eric Cook....My fathers' side of the family came from Serbia and when my grandfather landed on Ellis Island his name was written down as "Cook". I'm trying to figure out the spelling of our original last name...

The only information I can provide is that at the time my ancestors were high powered generals in the serbian army and all but the one that escaped were shot in front of a firing squad when the government or whatever was overthrown...wWe believe it was something like cheyuk (pronounced kee-yuke) Could someone help?

i forgot to mention that the surname ćuk would be pronounced like "chew-k" or "chook". similar to Cook but without the ch. but you can see that in english the C would be pronounced as K.

Dear Sirs
my name is Jovan Veljovic' I'm born in Germany Son of Velislav Veljovic' from Oplanic' (Sumadija).
My father was a German war prisoner in the 2. world war.
My family lives in Oplanic' since 1806 (confirmed).
My Ancestor Velimir(Veljo) immigrated from Dubnica(Sjenica) to this place. Our family slava is Kuzman & Damjan.
As I do not believe that my ancestors family name was Veljovic' I'm pointing more on follow up my slava.
A DNA research stated that I'm I2A and my ancestors around 1000 AD where used to live in the Adriatic area of todays Croatia, Bosnia or Montenegro maybe Albania too.
I'm looking to find the link from Dubnica back to.......and hope that You can help.

yours sincerley
Reinhard Jovan Veljovic'

Please read the FAQ, you should start your search in Oplanic. DNA research is not useful without a family tree.

Regards,
Sergej

I know Serbs with the last name Kukic. If they heard Cook-ich, they may have just shortened to Cook.

Go to www.ancestry.com and search ellis island immigrants list. Also you could call your main library with the question. They have been very helpful to me in the past in many ways.

I have a friend, Luka Kukić (Luke Cookich, on english perhaps).

He lives in Serbia, Srem, village Čerević near town NOVI SAD.

I've heard for some families named Ćuk (Chook) in that area, but I don't know them. Sorry....

P.S. Sorry for bad english...
