Serbs in Croatia recognized | 20:33 May 26 | Beta

ZAGREB -- Wednesday – Serbs living in Croatia will soon have their own flag, coat of arms and anthem, according to Croatian daily Vjesnik.

There are also plans to name a representative for the Serbian minority.

For now there is one district body made up of representative of 17 Serbian communities which represents the Serbian minority in Croatia. This body will be able to make all important decisions regarding the Serbian people in Croatia, such as what their flag, coat of arms, and anthem will be.

Croatian Prime Minister told Serbian representatives to be cautious with what they select to represent themselves with, stating that “Croatia has many wounds that are still unhealed,” left from last decade’s war.

Regards,
Sergej

Officially Serbs are recognised in Croatia as a minority. This means that the documents in Serbian Churches have been microfilmed as well, which is more important for us as a society.

Sergej

All documents in Croatia and in Croatian institutes such as the archives have been microfilmed in cooperation with the LDS church. You can check them at http://www.familysearch.org and at Family History Library Centers. There are however none in Serbia and none of the Serbian archives have been microfilmed.

A lot of Serbian records were destroyed during the war, however data stored in archives have been preserved. We have members that are doing a slow and timestaking research because of the destruction. The SOC did not store any copies of the books and most likely there is an unknown amount of data lost forever.

In Serbia our archives are not microfilmed. In case of natural or any other disaster we run the risk of loosing all our heritage.

Take into account that not all microfilmed data is cataloged yet and online. Thats why you need to locate a Family History Library Center or rent a microfilm to study.

Sergej

How can I find out which church's records have been destroyed and which are still extant? I have a birth certificate for my grandfather from the Krupa monastery near Obrovac. I'd like to be able to trace my line further back.
Thank you.
Michael
