I am interested in information on surnames common to the village of Silbas. My great grandfather was born there on April 5, 1890. Upon arriving in the USA he changed his surname to Suski. According to family members, this was a shortened version of the original and now lost surname. The only firm information I have was provided by a 1917 draft registration card in which my great grandfather lists the following:

Name: John Suski
Place of Birth: Silbas Slovackland Hungary
Date of Birth: 5 April 1890
Residence: Genesee Co Flint Michigan

So kindly forwarded to me by Mr.Robert Jerin, as taken from census records is the approximate year,1908, that John arrived in the USA and the approximate year of his citizenship, 1919.

Upon his arrival in New York, John met and married a Ms.Anna Helemcin from the village of Orlo, Slovakia.

Any direction, or help that could be provided wolud be greatly appreciated.

Calvin

You should contact the archives there. However, you should be aware that Serbian law only allows you to research your own family.

Sergej:

I appreciate the reply. That is a catch 22. It seems that, as I am trying find the original family surname, I might have a bit of trouble researching under that law. I don't yet know who my family is. Any suggestions?

Thanks
Calvin

Just follow the normal steps i.e. start with you father-->grandfather--> etc. That is the best proven method. Post any questions you have here and we will help you out. Use the Archival Network page to find the archives address.

Regards,
Sergej
