My mom's maiden name was Skala, which can be debated as to its origins. My mother currently goe sunder the ethnicity bunjevkinja, but usually just Croat. Her dad is from Pacir, near Subotica. Her fathers name was Petar and they did not have a slava and were of catholic faith. He was born in the 1920's I believe. Can anyone help me find the true origins of the last name? I kno there are many possibilities including Czech, Slovak and even Polak.
Well, it depends on how you write the name. Please tell me if there is a little "v" above the S or not. It could be an Italian name. There are Italians living in Vojvodina and Skala is an Italian name in that region. That would explain a lot.

no, there is no š in Skala, that is the right spelling and has been for over 3 generations.
Ok how far back did you trace your pedigree? What is the earliest apperance of this name?
