How exactly can we submit surnames  to this database? I think that for each surname the entry submission should have:

-the original spelling ( in both Latin and Cyrillic script)

-geographical distribution

-earliest documented entry (historical sources, vital records)

- transcription to other langagues that were in official use (Latin, Italian, German, Hungarian...)

- spelling variants of later-date (after emmigrating to US,...)

-other related surnames ( clan-name of origin, shortened or expanded variants)

-additional information ( patron saint, family nickname)

I would be more than happy to add entries to such a database of ethnic Serbian surnames.

How exactly can we submit surnames  to this database? There soon will be a submit button.

-the original spelling ( in both Latin and Cyrillic script) The site is in English and Serbian. The Serbian version is in Latin instead of Cyrillic because past polls indicate that the majority wants Latin. Nonetheless, we are working on a script that will transliterate the Latin into Cyrillic so there is no need to do the work double. We are working with volunteers .

-geographical distribution: What parameters do you suggest for this? At the moment its possible to add multiple locations. We can add extra fields but the tricky part is to measure this correctly.

-earliest documented entry (historical sources, vital records): There already is a field for Primary Sources. Once the Submit button is active you will be able to see this.

- transcription to other langagues that were in official use (Latin, Italian, German, Hungarian...) Its possible to do this under the field Background.

- spelling variants of later-date (after emmigrating to US,...) The Rodoslov system is more suitable for this, people can submit their own personal pedigree.

-other related surnames ( clan-name of origin, shortened or expanded variants): This can be put under Background as well.

-additional information ( patron saint, family nickname): We already added a Slava name field with all Saints.

If you are interested please send me PM and we can discuss this further.

The updates are almost done. One of the questions we get from time to time is why the Serbian version is in Latin. The answer is actually practial. We have a lot of people from Croatia and other surrounding regions that share heritage but dont read Cyrillic. Because we work with volunteers the choice became obvious. People can post in Cyrillic without problems.

We are working on a script that will transform all Latin Serbian into Cyrillic by a press on the button. Until then patience is needed :-)

People can start adding surnames tonight.

Regards,
Sergej

Thanky you for the detailed answer:)

I suggested that names and surnames be written in Serbian Latin and Cyrillic script because:

- the vital records are written in Old Church Slavonic and Serbian Cyrillic scripts only, and this may help people unfamiliar with the languages recognize them.

-many resources like historical books, family or village websites are in Cyrillic script only. Googling the Latin transcription won't be enough to find results about  a surname mentioned in them.

-it would be kinda tragic if Serbian surnames in  Serbian Genealogy Society database were not written in entries also in Cyrillics. Part of your mission is to make our heritage widely known, and this script is an important part of it.

If you insist on using both Latin and Cyrillic script, more people will perhaps learn of the unique nature of our language and its full synchronic digraphia. :D

I  will send you a PM about the surnames I can contribute.

Yugaya,

Thank you. I am checking with to see if there is a way we can implement this script faster. I will get back to you on that topic.

I will talk with the tech guys. I dont see problem with adding the fields you mention. We can even add a field where people can put the name with Church Slavonic. We should even include Arab due to the Tefters. As for Google, Google automatically already does transliteration on its search results but you are right. We are not against it, its merely a practicaly problem at the moment because we only have a limited amount of volunteers ;-)

I will post a new poll on the website to see if people their opinion has changed, its been a while since we polled this.

Срдачан поздрав,

Сергеј

Sergej

All Saints/Slava's have been added to the database. This means when people submit a surname they can select a Saint :-)
