Forum
Hello,
I'm brand new to the forum and I'm researching my geneaology. So far, I've traced my ancestors back to northeastern Austria-Hungary in the late 1800's, but I'm not sure how or when they got there.
I'm trying to figure out the origin of my last name, and after a lot of google searches, my best guess is that it is from Serbia or the surrounding region.
Does anyone have any input or thoughts about this? I'm open to hearing all opinions.
Thank you.
A little bit more info would be helpful. Where do you live now, some names and dates etc.
Regards,
Sergej
I currently live in the USA. Some paternal names include Joannes (János in Hungarian) and Basilius (Basil/Vasil in Hungarian). My ancestors immigrated into the USA through Ellis Island in 1922. The town they lived in when in Europe during the early 1900s was called Felso Jablonka in the Zemplin district of Austria-Hungary, which currently is called Vysna Jablonka in Slovakia. At that time, they practiced the religion of Greek Catholicism. My great grandfather (Basil/Vasil) fought with either the Austro-Hungarians or the Polish during WWI.
Let me know if I can provide any additional information.

But you should check with the Slovak society, you are now with the Serbian society. What I advice is contacting (via the Radix link) the archives in the nearest city. You can also check with churches there. I think they also microfilmed most of it.
