I am new to this list and am trying to find my serbian family.
My grandfather's name was Cira Mrksich and he came to America in 1911 with his wife Mary Maca. I do not have any paperwork on Cira, but I do have some documentation on my grandmother Mary, which I've put up on my website:

When they came to America, they had their last name changed to Marks.
Can anyone give me information on my grandparents?
Thanks,
Joanne M. Reitz
Hello Joanne,
This is the information I got for you.
Mrksic comes from Grahovo ( Niksic) and from Kotor. MonteNegro. It is mentioned that they used to live around river Bojana in 1360.
Stevanov-comes from Vojvodina. Jaksic as well.
From the online document that you provided we read that she comes from Srpska Crnja.
Srpska Crnja is a Serbian town in central-east Banat along side border with Romania. It is located in Torontal Country, Central Banat District, Province of Vojvodina, Republic of Serbia. It is about 150 km from capital city of Belgrade, 113 km from Novi Sad, 9 km south-east of Kikinda and 6 km south-west of Jimbolia, Romania.
Srpska Crnja is a very old town. The first written reference dates back to 1373, and the first time it appeared on the map was 1723. Poet and painter Djura Jaksic was born and grew up in the town.
The places to see in Srpska Crnja are:
Orthodox church built in 1775, with Djura's religious paintings (icons) on the altar
Memorial museum of Djura Jaksic.
Bust of Djura Jaksic located in the port of Orthodox church.
Monument to people of Crnja who were killed on the 5 of October - day of freedom from German occupation 1944, also located in the port of orthodox church.
The oldest grave monument from 1790.
The Lipar's Days in Srpska Crnja is a manifestation dedicated to Crnja's beloved Djura Jaksic. The tradition started in 1962.
Motel Kastel built as a castle 1943 for general Najhauzen.
The best thing to do is to write to the districts archives there. You can make a reference on the document that you have and they should have all the other info on your ancestors. One thing, the Serbian archives are not on microfilm and doing research takes time, effort and patience. Alas, we hope it will change in the near future.
I removed your email address, if people contact you through the Private Message option or respond to the post the system will email you. This prevents SPAM.
Hope this info helps.
