I've been trying for some time to find more information on my father's side of the family and his true descendence. He has been somewhat spare, maybe what you can describe as secretive, about his background when I was growing up. Now bitten by a bug to connect to his side of the family, I tried in vain to track down information on the internet but Progovac is rare enough of a name that I'm not having much luck. Here is what I know:
My father is from a village near Smederevo, if I'm not mistaken it's called Milosevac.
He told me that his father told him that our surname is from a village in Kosovo with the name PRUGOVAC. It's still there (near PRISTINA) now named PRUGOC.
There are family stories tied to Kosovo dating before even the famous Kosovo battle though I'm not sure if these are tall tales or not.
I remember him celebrating his SLAVA *slightly* before American Thanksgiving every year. I cannot remember the precise date nor the name.
With a name as rare as that, I have nevertheless come across people online with that surname that as far as I can tell are not related to me.
Any information would be helpful, even if it's only a pointer to someother website/database to continue the search. But this is literally all the information he has.
Just to make sure, I assume you are not in Serbia but in the States right? Is there any chance you will be in Serbia if the above is correct?
Regards,
Sergej
Yes, I'm in California right now. I used to go to Serbia more often but just to visit my Mom's side of the family who just about all live in Novi Sad. My father never even bothered taking us to his family on these visits though I suspect there is not much family left. He was the only child, and his parents long died before I was born. Any distant cousins he has he shunned for some reason. So I plan to go Serbia soon actually, when I get some affairs in order, to hunt down this side of the family. I'll also go to PRUGOC to see if the records have sommething about a family with my surname though something about this story seems just to be some family legend (why would PRUGOVAC turn into PROGOVAC).
Other than than that, my father has told me his father was in WW2 and his grandfather was in WW1. Also according to my father, his grandfather (my greatgrandfather) was a drunk, gambler, and murderer (over gambling debts) so I will check police records as well.
Cheers
I have one of the authors in my academic papers database who has that exact surname, from Serbia - PROGOVAC. I'll send you contact details in PM
