My father's grandparents were first generation Americans. We have finally found their census information for 1910, 1920 and 1930. I was wondering if any of you had some insite on what their true Serbian name would be and where we might find out about the family that still resides in Serbia?

From memory, here is what we know:
1910 - the census lists the names as Marko and Katherine Trifill, born in austria
1920 - the census lists the names as Martin and Katherine Trifiliosky, born in Serbia
1930 - the census lists the names as Mike and Katherine Trefun, born yugoslovia.

Trefun, being the americanized version of the name that I carry today.

Marko's obituary mentioned 2 brothers and a sister still abroad. We are not sure where to look to find birth or family information. The birth place changed over time but we do know they considered themselves Serbian and spoke the language.

So, what do you think the official Serbian version of their last name would have been? And, where might I find records to research it further?

After reading some of the other posts in English, I felt I should add the following:

The family was Greek Orthodox but i don't know of a family Saint.

on Marko's WWII draft registration, his birth place was listed as Banot Yugolsovia.

I've tried using ancestry.com and ellis island web sites to find the immigration records for Marko and Katherine as they came to the USA separately

Katherine's family name was given to us as Katherine Nicholas

Marko was born roughly 1888 and Katherine was born roughly 1892.

Being half a world away in the USA makes it hard to do research for Serbian information. I'm going to go read more about the paid membership... it may be of help!

Thanks for any responses!

Do you have any place names besides the Banat (its a region). Most likely they lived in what is now Vojvodina.
Trefun could be Trifun, or Trifunovic. Can you attach a scan of what Ellis Island and the immigration records hold. Also do you have anything on paper in Serbian to narrow things down because its still too broad.

Regards,
Sergej

I agree with SERGEJ that the last names could be TRIFUN or TRIFUNOVIĆ.

There are many Trifunović families near NOVI SAD in VOJVODINA (Serbia).
