Hello,
I don't speak Serb and this has added to my difficulty in finding family members. I am trying to trace my genealogy for surnames Palajac, Tokas and Rousch (spelling for Tokas and Rousch may not be accurate). I know that my great grandparents were married, lived and are buried in Perlez; however I am not able to find any additional family members by surnames Palajac, Tokas and Rousch using on-line phone directory listings and people searches.
I know from searching Ellis Island that my Great grandfather Joseph came to the US in 1913 and then went back to Perlez. My grandfather Peter and Grandmother Mary came to the US in 1921 and stayed for good.
I'm a little confused by Ellis Island entry because it states that my Great Grandfather was Serbian, Orthodox religion but my Grandfather said we are Croatian and I was raised Roman Catholic. I realize there were a great many changes taking place in the early 1900's but this difference in Nationality is a bit confusing when trying to trace family members.
Hi,
There are enough Palajac today in Croatia but also in Vojvodina. Most of them through migrated. I believe they are German of origin. The religion thing is always confusing. Some people here believe that if one is Orthodox he is Serb and if one if Catholic he is Croat. Of course this is silly, what you need to do is contact the district archives adn the Family History Library Center of the LDS church. All Catholic records have been microfilmed.
Regards,
Sergej
