Hi, I am trying to find out more about the surname Došen, as well as beyond my great great grandfather. My name is Predrag Došen born in Sydney, Australia, my father is Branko Došen born in Jarkovci village, town Indjija, Region, Srem, Vojvodina, Serbia, my grandfather was born I think in Beška, near Novi Sad, Vojvodina, Serbia, but apparently my great grandfather Spasoje known as Djuro was born in Brezovac village near Slunj, Croatia. Apparently my great great grandfathers name is Mihajlo Došen, and that is all that I know. Not sure where he was born, if it was in Croatia or Bosnia or elsewhere.

From what I've been told they lived in Bosnia, there were 3 brothers. On the night of the wedding of one of the brothers, a Turkish/Muslim custom is for the Aga/Muslim Cleric to sleep with your bride on the first night, that brother apparently dressed up as a Bride & killed the Aga, and then fled to Brezovac, region I think is Kordun in Croatia. Whether this is a myth or true I don't know, that is all the information I have.

Please help me further. Thank you.

Hi,

I will check things out but in the mean time read this article, I used Google Translate to display it in English for you:

Thank you, I think I have read this once before. Once again thank you for the translation but even though I was born in Australia, I am more than happy for you to communicate in English or Serbian if it is easier. Moze i cirilica.

Hi,

I did some research. From the data I gathered thus far your surname originated in Našice, Croatia. There is a Croatian branch and Serbian one. I would advice you contact the District Archive there via our Archives Page with the data of your ancestor. The can see if there is a match or not.

Regards,
Sergej

429 1889 Došen Petar Ilijin 41 Brezovac, Rakovica

This is from the information database on the cadettes whose apprenticeship was sponsored by the Serbian Trade Association "The Merchant" . This person , Petar Došen, son of Ilija, household number 41, from the village of Brezovac that belonged to Rakovica county at the time, started his apprentziceship in the year 1889. He would have been ten years old at the time (  count  +/- five years  becuse some cadettes went away as small children, and some after they finished primary school).

In the same record there is one entry for the other location you mentioned - Inđija:

36430 1943 Došen Radivoj Gojkov Moja Volja, Inđija

You can contact this organization for more inforormation, or see with your family members if they know of them.

You have not provided information on when your family moved to  Vojvodina .

The revised victims lists for WWII casualties from Vojvodina with names cross-checked and added based on research 2002-2008  have three Došen  family members listed as victims  that were  residents of  Jarkovci , Inđija municipality:

Došen (Jovan) Dragan, Jarkovci, rođen 1923. Srbin, ubijen 1941. u NOBu,
Zimnjak (0179030004)

Došen (Jovan) Dušan, Jarkovci, rođen 1926. Srbin, poginuo 1944. u NOBu,
Virovitica (0179030003)

Došen (Nn) Đuro, Jarkovci,  rođen 1883. Srbin, umro 1941. pri deportaciji,
Drenovac (0179030006)

If you are a SGS member we can help you get in contact with the original family from Croatia, as they will be able to help you with archives and information on your ancestry there, cemeteries etc.
