I sent a letter in December to the only Mihajlović listed in the online phone book in Erdut. We are not related, but since Erdut is small, he showed my letter to someone who was also descended from a Mihajlović. We may be distant cousins. This generous woman looked through church books dating back to 1850 and found my great-grandfather, Filip (b. 12.11.1856), who married a Mara Maširević. They only had two children. The first was a daughter Angelina (b. 1894) who only had one daughter, Zlatica Babic, who had no children. The second was my grandfather, Milorad (b. 07.09.1896), who married my grandmother Zorka ĐŒulić 03.02.1919. Their first child, Georgija, died after 20 days. They emigrated to the US in 1921 and had two more children, my tetka Olga and my father, Lazar.
Since Filip has no other direct descendents, I'm now curious about the Maširević surname. If anyone out there can help, I'm all ears.
Two other Mihajlović names appeared near Filip's in the church book; an Uroš (b. 1858) and Stevan (b. 1864). The woman who combed the church records is a descendent of Stevan. The three men all have the same "krsna slava." Also, Stevan's grandchildren had the same family "nickname" (nadimak) as my grandfather and great-grandfather: “ŠKILJO.†My sister-in-law (who is from Niš) and brother have roughly translated that word as "squinting" or "squinty." My "snaja" thought that if a family has the same krsna slava and nickname, she's 99% sure we are related.
Anyway, just wanted to update the folks who visit here and also to ask for help in a different last name - Maširević.
Also, out of curiosity, would Serbian folks from this area of Croatia be considered from "Slavonia"? Thanks so much for any help!
Hello,
I am trying to find living relatives as well: any Masirevic in your family who were in Belgrade in and around 1928? Married with Knezevic or Obrenovic?
Thanks!
