Hi there
I'm a Canadian Serb and have always wondered what the origin or meaning of my last name "Vignjevic" is. Does anyone know, or have any ideas how I could find out?
Peter
Hi Peter,
The surname originates from Kosovo. Exact meaning is a bit obscure but I would suggest to do some genealogical research to assertain why your ancestors took that surname.
The best thing to do is to find out which of your ancestors came to Canada and to start a backtrace from that person on.

Peter,
Ellis Island records indicate that at least 50 VIGNJEVIC arrived from 1892-1924 most coming from the area around Ogulin... at least one came from Montenegro.
According to the 2002 edition of Hrvatski Enciklopedijski Rjecnik it is one of several surnames derived from Viganj or Viganja, meaning blacksmiths forge VIC ending of course means son of. The name is found in Ogulin, Donji Lapac and Karlovac regions while other related surnames VIGAN is found in Zadar and VIGANJ on Otok Korcula.

PREZIME VIGNJEVIC JE NASTALO OD REČI VIGANJ, Е TO JE ZAPRAVO KOVAČKI DEO ALATA!
Who me? Yes I speak Serbian. People tend not to read all articles on the site so we try to motivate them to do things themselves before asking obvious questions.
